I just purchased my first boat and I have some newbie questions.
What are the must have items that you need to have on a boat?

I have the following:

- Marine radio
- Extra marine battery
- GPS
- Spare blades (using composite prop)
- Tools for changing prop and
- Jumper cable (I won't need this if I install the battery switch for the two batteries)
- Of course...live jackets and flashlight.
- Do I need a spotlight?

spare fuses, a tool box, with the basics, put foam rubber in to to keep from rattling. anchor. if going off shore a sea anchor is nice to have in an emergency, to keep the bow into the waves.

Flares, & a fire extinguisher. Oh, & the 'ol standby, a roll of duct tape. A spotlight would probably come in handy for docking. Spare blades for that comp prop are good, but in my opinion a complete spare prop is a must have. If you spin a hub you're out of luck.

bailing bucket.............(can also sub as the head if needed)

- Do I need a spotlight?
i think it's a good idea. if ya boat at night at all, yes. yer gonna need to see the dock or the shoreline or whatever. if ya boat only in the day it might not be needed at all. but. what if ya breakdown and then it gets dark. a spotlight could be real handy. i boat mostly in the day. but, i added a 12v receptical so i could have a light if i needed it. and i do carry one on board always...

Contact your local coast gard aux. and they will give you a free safty check and tell you everything that is required for your boat. You can also get a list off the net.

i thought you weren't supposed to jump the batteries on a boat? Too much risk of spark.

given the choice I would take chicks over beer. My wife even said I could have a new boat -but I would have to get a new girl friend to go with it--I think she means divorce?

Lake/river boating or offshore?

Also, what kind of outboard do you have? You may think you have all required tools to complete a prop changeout but you may not.
