I got my boat going fast for the first time yesturday, but every time it would hit a bigger wave and come down, the engine would die. Then it would take about 2-5 minutes to get it started again. I could crank it, but it would not fire. When I bought it, the coil was just sitting behind the distributor. I bolted it up, but I dont know if its damaged. I know a lot more about off-roading and have an MSD ignition system on my truck with one of their high vibration coils on it. Would that be a good idea to run it on my boat? They are sealed well, put out 40,000 volts and obviously are made to handle the vibrations and bouncing of off roading. Would they be good in my boat? Its the on in the avatar pic and sig.

Re: Bad coil?

Why not figure out What's missing when it Quits,.......
Rather than Just Throwing Parts at it,..??..??.....

You don't say whether it's lacking Spark when it Quits,......
And,.....
It ain't that hard to Check.........

Sorry, didnt think of that out there, but ignition seems like the only thing that could be wrong

Im gonna get another coil just to rule it out since I wasnt secured anyway, it could be damaged from bouncing around. Any other input?

I have the same boat as you except i have the 4.3l and I had a similar issue. In my boat there is an ignition fuse and it wasn't contacting right. Took it out and put it in securely and viola everything ran great.

When you put the new coil in and it does the same thing, try measuring the voltage at the coil and pulling a plug wire to see if you have a spark.
