How better of a ride?

I know this is a strange question and almost impossible to answer, but would still like to get some opinions. Here's the stats:

Current boat: 24'1" length, 8'3" beam, 4,000 lbs dry with engine

Proposed boat: 28'1" length, 9'6" beam, 6,800 lbs dry with engines

Both are Grady-White, same layout, same hull design.

The question is how much better will the ride be with the proposed boat? Current boat does well being a 24 footer, but I'd expect the proposed one to ride much better. Am I setting myself up for disappointment? A seatrial will obviously solve this, but that wouldn't happen unless a contingent offer is made and accepted.

Thanks-

Re: How better of a ride?

you did not mention power differences. that will make a difference. of course the bigger boats is going to ride better. but they all have their limitations.

Not an Expert but::
You didn't mention if it is an I/O or straight drive. But if an I/O the twin setup could change handling quite a bit. Thats a lot of weight at the stern.
I would assume the bottom design is similar but I think you should see if you can comfirm that.Maybe you can find a test on the internet. If you like the boat put in your offer and take a test ride.My guess is with the twin setup
planing out will be a different expierence.

Same deadrise? Not quite sure how to answer matttt . . . More weight in the stern, same deadrise, longer, I am gonna go with 12.7% better :) Seriously though, the only thing that could make her ride worse is that she is beamier, but I think the other stuff more than compensates for that.

Would not buy a boat without a trial run. Too many variables come to play and too much invested to be wrong. First question is why is it for sale?

You didn't say what model but I'll assume a Sailfish at that length. The Sailfish is the larger version of the Gulfstream. The Gulfstream is a HP pig and so is the Sailfish. With only 450 Hp on the back (rated for 600 Hp)you're on the edge of under powered and you need everything you an get with that beam. with that boat.

Nice riding boat but you need the horses to back it up

First question is why is it for sale?

With a Grady it’s most likely moving up in size. It doesn’t take long to get twofootice with these boats. The last two I sold where for moving up purposes and the last two I bought where from people moving up.

You need to ask some people around where you live. I don't know what it is exactly, but I have been told that different regions have different wave cycles and some length boats do a lot better than others. I think 21-25 is the one people stay away from around here...

Re: How better of a ride?

thanks for the input fellas. in one big day, the grady is off my list. we stumbled upon and fell in love with a 1999 tiara 2900 open. it literally looks brand new, spent an hour on it yesterday. wife fell in love, i think i did as well.

funny thing is, we were looking to get into a larger express/open fish, but got discouraged and started looking at larger walks. then without trying, we find this one and it brings us back to what we were looking for in the first place.

the tiara is 29' long with a 11' beam and weighs in at 11,000#. twin 454s will push her through the bay nicely. no question about a better ride over my 24 footer.

if all goes well, offer will go in early this week and survey/seatrial scheduled soon. wish me luck!

I'd find a way to sea trail that boat ,thats the only way to compare two boats(too many variables). If you like it buy it,you only live once!

I think the only differences your going to find is in fuel consumption, maintenance and insurance. if anchored.I've owned a '89 sailfish and enjoyed the cockpit space, but was'nt impressed with ride or performance in general.
