Water coming over Transom

Ok guys i'm new here but the site looks great and I hope to use it alot. I am also new to owning a boat but have been around boats a good deal. I just bought a Grizzly Tracker 1860 SC and I am having problems with water coming over the transom. When I plane the boat out I then trim the motor up correctly and the front of the boat starts bouncing so then I trim the motor down to stop the porpoising but then water is splashing into the back of the boat. From the dealer it is set as far in the water as possible. I do have 3 or 4 other holes below the one that it is mounted to. Should I raise the motor one hole and see how that works? Also I bought the boat brand newabout 2 months ago so would this be something the dealer should fix for free??? Thanks guys and any help would be great. Sorry about the edit but I dont know if this will make a difference but the motor is a 50hp Mercury 4 stroke and the boat will do about 32mph now. Hope this helps

Once you get your height right, and I will leave that to someone else, you need to investigate trim tabs. Smart Tabs or Helm adjustable. Both will help you a lot . . .

Don't know what kind of warranty you got, but I'd say on a brand new boat purchase the dealer should gladly fix the problem. He has to maintain customer satisfaction and good will if he wants to stay in business. But don't wait, the sooner you make the problem known to him, the better.

the cavitation plate should be in line with the bottom of the hull ......

In my opinion the dealer should fix the problem(probably too low).You can check your self;generally the anti vent plate (just above the prop)needs to be about even with the bottom of the boat.Every boat is different it may be higher or slightly lower.Depends on the performance.
The dealer should have set it there and then test run it to be sure it performed right.In my opinion if its set up wrong a warning bell should go off.

If the motor is moved from its current location, be sure that who ever does it applies lots of sealant to the bolt holes in the transom - like 3M 4200 or Boatlife. Don't want to open up a leak in a new boat that will cause a rotten transom or stringers 5 years down the road.

i think its an aluminum boat , and also many boats today are wood free!

still want it sealed well though!

yeah the boat is wood free in the transom but I will make sure they seal it up good. I did call the dealer today and they said they would fix it for free but the problem is that the place they usually test the boats is low on water becuase we are in an extreme drought here in NC so I dunno I am just hoping I only have to make one trip becuase they are about 45 to 50 mins away from my house. Thanks for all the input guys and I think the motor is just to low in the water but I will let them decide how far it needs to go up.

I have the same thing happen on my boat. If the motors too low it sprays over the back like crazy.

But I have power trim which as soon as I see the spray I inch up the motor until the spray goes away. In reading your posts it did not appear that you have power trim. I have a 40 hp 4 stroke Mercury and I wouldn't want to try and pull that sucker up and down manually each time. So I take it you don't have PT on yours?

If not, the dealer can adjust your motor, but before I'd invest in trim tabs I'd look to see what your dealer would charge to add PT on. Real nice feature when you see the bottom coming up quickly below the boat. Worth the cost rather than having to pay for a prop or lower unit or your back

What's your max hp rating on the boat's plate. A 50 hp on an 18 foot boat seems somewhat under powered to me. You might eventually need trim tabs anyway if you are unhappy with how fast your hole shot is especially with several people onboard or how long it takes the boat to get up on plane.

And the boat will do 32mph right now with two people in the boat and two batteries and a trolling motor and a tank full of gas and fishing gear where the motor is set so thats plenty fast enough for me.

Grizz, where are you in nc and what waters you frequent? I live in charlotte and mostly fish Mountain Island Lake.

I would obviously want the dealer to make this right, but if you end up with water or porpoise, I strongly recommend you try Smart Tabs. They will allow you to use your trim . . .

Ya, your cavitation plate must be riding too low in the water then because the PT would take the spray away.

I get the same spray off my transducer when it slips down a little too low.

They are going to have to raise your motor a notch on the transom. Hopefully, they get it right the first time they adjust it.
