Have you ever modified a boat, car, motorcycle or any other device and regretted it? Ever spent too much on fixing something and later regretted it? I sure did. That dayum lawnboy lawnmower that I got out the junkpile, put 130 bucks into it and it still knocks!

Anybody else have similar experiences?

Re: The official mod gripe thread!

Well I modified the trolling motor on my boat, Thanks by the way to TD and the wrest of the guys whom helped. I added an electric motor for the steering on to an older motor guide 3. At one point I was regretting it when I was trying to modify the mercury thruster 2 because everything was failing because the steering motor's strength nothing held up. That's why I changed trolling motors. Yes the handi cap modification on a trolling motor thread. I got the modification working with a different tactic and hopefully I wont be regretting it. So far everything is working great. I modified a Murray ridding lawn mower and fit a smaller 5hp motor on it just to drive around because I didn't have an ATV. I guess you can say I modified the boat again because it didn't have all the features at the bow that the driver's console has as far as the control panel, I added nearly everything to the bow. I modified the Kawasaki engine on the generator and put a briggs and straton carburetor on it, so far I regret buying the generator all together because the generator part quit working. Made a tractor boom out of a Chevy tow package and 2x3 tubing and other steel. I'm sure there has been a few other things I have modified but no others come to mind at the moment. No regrets though otherwise.

snicker, bet the mods is all over this one.......:D

to answer the qestion. no. i went to auto tech school, and the teaches taught me that the way the oem has it is the best happy medium. i'm not rich, so i just go with what oem has to say. if ya want to mod it. yer gonna pay. and ya better know what yer modin or it won't work out.

i did mod a yamaha fx140 waverunner. put a less restrictive fa on it, better volicity stacks for the mpi. sealed the jet pump shoe better than oem and used a different impeller. all mods were a success. but mostly they weren't engine mods. did increase 200-300 over stock. it really was a success....never had that happen...they were riva aftermarket parts designed for my perticular toy..............

Oh yea, I almost forgot to answer waterinthefuel's question.

Years ago I modified my single, unmarried life style and shortly after realized I was going to regret it, so I modified it back. Pretty much been happy ever since, even though I have modified my the single status again. :D:D

Forgot, I added an air horn and PA system to my 1990 Ford escort I use to own. I got somebody's attention with that getup, I passed somebody doing some lawn clean up I hollerd in the PA and they jumped lol. I added an ewga horn to my 79 3/4 ton chevy I once owned. This was back in my teens.

Re: The official mod gripe thread!

Yes, I have a prime example,,, Many years ago, on a lark, I bought a nice dark silver used 75' Chevy Monza 2+2 hatchback 262 V8 5spd. sport model, loaded, including factory leather interior, & A/C, like a practical economical mini Camaro only to find out it needed a camshaft. Well it would have been fine if I had put a stock 350 camshaft in it, but I decided to go one better and put a Chevy high performance 327/250hp high lift hydraulic cam in it. Big Mistake! With all the work it was a nightmare to do, But it was sure fast, for what it was, and could reach 7k rpm with a 2 bbl carb, and it had a groovy, lumpy, rythmic idle, But, it lost a lot of low end torque, while gaining lots of rpm, not good with a 2:76 Posi rear (even though the factory mag rims & tires were only 13"tall, but 6" wide). Suffice it to say, milage went right down the tubes, and it required super unleaded. It was sporty, & thrilling to drive, but when the thrill wore out, I had to sell it simply because I changed the whole concept of the car, it was no longer a mini econo sport car. If only I put the right cam in it, I might still have it.

I used the trim cylinders/pump off an old OMC Cobra outdrive on my old Cub Cadets snow blade. Worked well for 3 years, but the pump finally went kaput. Guess they weren't made to run as often as this one did.

I put a K&N air filter on my ML320.

The resulting replacement mass air sensor was very expensive. :(

Hey, if you can't make it yours.....what's the point , right? :D

I stayed with the stock stuff once...and it fouled up more than my modded stuff did and cost me more in the long run. But I must admit I've had my share of failures as well. Live and Learn, do it better the next time around. Listen when other people talk, you never know when you might learn something helpful.

That's the same thing thay taught us in tech school to. Just remember that thay spent a lot money to make that part for that peace of equipment to be the best all around part. But keep in mind that not all OEM parts do not work as well as some of there jobber counter parts.
