Hello everyone! I've recently retired from the Army and am now getting around to all those things I thought I'd get to years ago. Damn, time flies! One of them is to get my Dad's old Evinrude Fastwin 18 operational. It has sat in an unheated storage shed in South Dakota for the last 25 years! It worked great when it was first stored. Never fogged. I could sure use some guidance on where to start. It is a 1958 Fastwin Eighteen S/N 15024-12232w/o electric start. I've ordered an original used 12 page parts manual from ebay. I could use some suggestions on a good step-by-step shop manual (pictures are a good thing). Also, need some recommendations of what would be best to do and in what order, i.e. rebuild carb, water pump etc.. I hope not to have to tear the head apart. To my knowledge the piston is not frozen. I pulled the starter rope once several years ago and it was free at that time. Never pulled the rope after or before that. I also have the orignial fuel tank and hose. Where can I get a fuel tank rebuild kit and does it have a rubber bladder inside? Thank you all in advance.

Welcome to the forum. There is a section on awakening a sleeping outboard which covers just about everything you would need. Search the forums for it as you should have no trouble finding it.

Re: Newbee and Fastwin 18 rebuild

i had numerous gentle giants. remove plugs, put a little oil in the cylinders, and prop the motor on it's face, so the rings get to sit in oil for a day or 2. then turn on it's back to drain. now pull the rope gently(with plugs out). feel for any hard spots. hard spots are signs of rust. or other problem. if no problems, do a compression test, pull the rope till the needle quits going up. post you compression numbers, so we can see if you have a viable base to work with.

were looking for 100psi compression or more, but most important is they are within 10% of each other.

100lbs is nice but my 18's run great on 80lbs or so... as long as they are close to each other...

You can get pressure fuel tank rebuild kits at vintageoutboard.com as well as other places.

You're getting a parts manual for that engine? If you scan it in at all I'd LOVE a copy if you could :) As i have 2 '58's a '59 a '60 a '61 and a '66 and I dont have one yet :)

What the awakening an engine will tell you is to replace the coils and impeller for sure and maybe some of the other parts...

Hmmm... guess that's not how to PM. I see now that one needs to click on login name, then PM. Oh well, next time. Thank you all for your input. This little project should be fun... especially with support from all of you. Again, thanks!
