Hello All,

I need help in deciding if it is worth buying an approximate year 1975 Starcraft 18' Aluminum boat with a 140hp OMC 2.5L 4 cylinder i/o motor. Now the question I have is...the boat doesn't run....Is it worth buying the boat still? The guy is asking $1000.00 for it. What questions should I ask before I decide to buy it or not? Please help as I would really like the boat, but am unsure of the work that needs to be put into it. The guy did say the lower leg was problem free and that the motor just needed to be fixed. He was unsure of what work needed to be accomplished. Is $1000.00 too much or should I offer less. The people on here have always been so very helpful, I just want another boat project to work on. I just don't want to bite off more than I can chew. The other idea about this boat that the seller expressed was that there might have been water in the cooling system of the motor and then it was frozen...you see...I live in Canada. How much damage could be caused from freezing in winter on these motors?

You really do NOT want to buy a boat that you can not run and buying a 1975 OMC even if it ran would be a a bad idea

Getting and service on a 1975 OMC unit would be hit and miss at best as they are not making anymore OMC techs

Nope,.......

A 1975 with a Frozen OMC isn't even worth $100.,.... Muchless $1000.......

Well,...... Maybe $100..... Just because the price of Scrap Aluminum is up......

A 2.5 liter is a 120hp. If it's a 140 it will be a 3.0 liter

Is it possible to convert this boat to an outboard? Is the integrity of the hull worth buying it? How difficult is it to convert this boat to an outboard?
I have read posts that people have converted an inboard boat to an outboard. Is it possible to upgrade the drive to mercruiser or anything else?

Saskatoon, keep shoppin, unless your really in love with this boat, theres a better deal around the corner.
By the time you get it fixed or converted your gonna go way over what its worth, and it will only matter if you love the boat.

Your Choices are Volvo,+ Mercruiser......

It's Claimed that Volvos are Better,.... But harder to find Parts for.....

I run Mercruisers....

Re: Need help with 140hp OMC 2.5L 4cylinder

I want a boat that I can fish, but I need a deeper boat as I have two young kids that I need to make sure they are safe. I had a 14' closed runabout that I fixed up and resold making a few bucks on it. I also want a boat that I can ski behind if I so choose as well. So what kind of boat am I looking for....any help is needed...

I think if you posted that question over in the Boat Topics and Questions (not engine topics) forum, you would get better answers than here in the IO Engine problems forum.

You could find boats like that all the time around here.probably in the 2 to 4 thousand range.
I would look for a boat with the 4.3 Merc setup or larger, plenty of power to pull a tube or skier up but not real bad on fuel..

Thats a clean looking boat in the pic Bob,Cobia? Great boats..

It would take me 1 day and 10 hours driving non-stop to get there, then I have to tow that boat all the way back home as well...unless you wanna tow it here for me...LOL!

Re: Need help with 140hp OMC 2.5L 4cylinder

Thanks guys. I picked this one up for $300 from a friend of mine. Just needs a floor (almost done with that). Also the trim just clicks. I guess the motor is frozen. Runs good other than that. its a '84 Cobia. Any ideas on the trim problem?

Saskatoon, you do not need to find that EXACT boat, there are lots of manufacturers that make an almost identical boat.
Go to boattraderonline.com and look around.
Since you are now looking for another boat altogether, I would suggest you repost over in the Boat Topics and Questions (not engines) forum for things and places, and others opinions on different boats.
Locking this thread, as it has nothing to do with the original topic.
