Johnson Sea Horse ID Help

Cleaned out a garage last week and was given an old Johnson Sea Horse model HD25, Seriel Number 568404. Can someone ID the year, oil/fuel ratio and recommend a repair manual. The engine seems to have great compression and is in very good shape.

HD-25 2.5HP 1946-50

I would use 20:1, 87 or 89 US Octane to TCW-3 100% synthetic oil or XD-50 synthetic blend.

If you can read the decal on the front of the motor it says to mix 1/2 pint of oil per gallon of gas. That is 16:1, plus that old a motor probably has a lot of internal wear so the extra rich oil mix will help "fill in the spaces."

Set the low speed needle on the front of the motor to about 1/2 to 5/8 of a turn open and the high speed knob to about 1- 1 1/2 turns.

I have 3 of those engines and they are finicky and parts are hard to come by. But if you get it going, let us know how it went

I also need help identifying a Johnson Sea Horse. After my dad passed away I inherited it. The outside cowl has 3 Hp decals. The decal on the front that gives the manufacturing location and the oil and gas ratio mix says 3 hp OBC at 4000 rpm. Stamped on the side of the engine model #HD 20 Serial # 451154. Looking up this model # on the internet states it is an early 1940's series 2.5 hp. Can anyone clear this up?

The HD-20 was made from '41-'45. Serial # 451154 was made in 1942. It is a 2.5 hp engine. The decals must have been changed. The model # tells all.

The motor was called a "Seahorse '3' with recoil" and your serial number is from 1941.
