I saw the pictures Don. And one shows the model # is 982435 and says the serial # is W228703.

I don't know OMCs, but it's a Stringer drive of some type.

Hmmmm... so noone can confirm for shure what type of drive it is? Yes, it's cable controlled & an electro motor is trimming the drive up and down!

I didn't see the horse shoe anode at the back. Ill take a guess 1978 to 1981 Hydro Mechanical shift. Just a guess.

Interesting... Guess no OMC specialists :D The problem is, the guy wants this boat sold as is and just wants to reseal the lower unit (water in oil). He doesn't want to spend more money than necessary. He asked me to order the parts needed - and I don't know what to order :S

Still hoping u can help me

Being an owner of OMC that needed work, I can tell you right now resealing the lower will not likely bring that OD up to snuff. You will probably be better off truly selling it as is without making any repairs to it. IMHO

Re: Help with identifying an OMC outdrive

The last few years of stringers were painted silver, that one appears to be white (under the black), so I expect it's pre '82. Definitely pre '84.

If the engine was 4 cyl, it's a 400 series, a V6 or V8 would be 800 stringer.

I had an '84 for 20 years, changed the upper seals & bearings 2 times, they were all off the shelf bearing supply house parts.

The 1st time a marine repair shop ordered the parts from OMC, for about $350. I kept the old parts, took them to Canadian Bearings here in Ontario, sourced the full set for $85 the 2nd time.

I expect the lower unit will probably also use standard seals, but that's a guess. I gave my OMC manual away when I sold the outdrive to switch to Merc.

Here's a pic of my '84 lower, note the rectangular hole just behind the 6 vent holes, that's where a second anode fits on later years. The primary one would be horseshoe shaped and bolted on at the top of the picture
The coiled black line is the shift cable.

I had an OMC on a 1980 Wellcraft v-20. It looked exactly like this one. i had a 305 cu. in. v8 in it. The source of my leaking was where the shift cable entered the case. My mechanic said he couldn't order a new boot for the cable. I sold it 3 years ago. I really liked the3 boat however.

At this point, I'd put a fitting in the oil drain hole (3/8-16, I believe) and put 5 psi air into it, see where it bubbles.

Re: Help with identifying an OMC outdrive

only 1985 stringer drives (and 1985 engines) were silver, just for future reference...it was a one year thing
? 2 years, maybe?
I ordered a new Glastron in the fall of '83, it had a new OMC stringer 5.7 installed in winter, I took delivery May 1, 1984 and it was all silver. All my literature said '84.

Re: Help with identifying an OMC outdrive

This is a very old ( 70's) OMC stern drive lower unit. Just looking at the tilt gear brings back nightmares for me. The worm gear that used to tilt that thing up would literally blow out of the housing if the unit was lowered too quickly. I would replace one of these gears monthly at $45 dollars (70's money) a piece. The problem got so bad that OMC actually designed a bracket to hold the gear in the housing once it did blow out; however, water still poured into the housing anyway.

I remember the ball gears used to wear off quickly if the unit was not trimmed completely down while running. To top it all off, the intermediate housing which connected this unit to the motor was another nightmare. Finally, have you ever tried to replace (or find) the large rubber boot that fits onto this thing and the hull? HAHAHA Good luck.

Run, run far away from this one.

Re: Help with identifying an OMC outdrive

Hello there! Some updates - the prop shaft has 15 splines + the lower unit looks like the silver one except there is NO square anode after those 6 holes. Soooooo...... what does that mean?
