Force 120 Powerhead

Would anyone know a good / reliable source for Force Powerheads? I was able to go through the parts section of I-Boats but I've never done business with them. Is rebuilt the way to go or should I focus on finding one that is used?

My personal opinion which I have voiced here many times is that

1. If you are at all mechanically inclined
2. you are willing do get your hands dirty and are willing to do the work

Then it is worth the cost savings and self satisfaction to rebuild a powerhead yourself. The only thing that should make you hesitate is if the crankshaft has been damaged because a new one is VERY expensive and even a used one can be a bit pricey.--depends on how lucky you are in finding one. On an average rebuild, you will probably save more than 600 bucks and possibly closer to 1000. --Depending upon what parts need replacing.

Very few specialty tools are needed--almost everything is a standard sized fastening part and the only "expensive" tool needed is a torque wrench.

Any questions that the manual may leave in your mind can usually be answered on this forum. Force outboards are WAY simpler than automobile engines and once you get into it the fear factor will diminish or disappear. A complete tear down and rebuild should take somewhere around 10 hours plus time spent traveling to have block rebored etc.

I got started with an old Chrysler 90HP because I didn't have the money to have it repaired. Now, I do a couple of engines a year for the fun of it--and of course, the extra money goes back into my boating hobby--450 labor per engine doesn't hurt.

Thanks a bunch for the reply. I am a shade tree mechanic. Have rebuilt car motors and transmissions. Just never a boat engine. I appreciate your observations. I've seriously considered doing this myself. Unfortunately the powerhead has a crack in the block at the 4th cylinder about two inches long, right where the head meets the block. Also, one of the head bolts is stripped so chances of getting it to torque to specs is limited. Would have to tap it to a larger bolt size probably.

A machine shop probably could weld the external crack but Im not sure how deep it goes. Was weighing options... also considering cost of my time to buy or rebuild myself.

It should also be noted that when rebuilding either a replacement powerhead, or the original, you will have to be able to be precise in measurements made regarding the cylinders, reed valves, and crank alignment.
Take your time and do it slow if you choose the overhaul route.
