My daughter 40, told me a while back that she could tell I was getting old when I stopped shooting birds and started feeding them. Then the other day I was talking to my youngest son 33, telling him that I got up so early the only thing on tv was a test pattern. He didn?t have a clue what a test pattern on tv was. When was the last time you saw a test pattern? You know, the circle with the Indian chief in the middle.

Re: another milestone

With the advent of latenite infomercials, TV channels run 24/7, no need for a test pattern if the transmitter has no "off" button!!!!

Never mind them, Thurps. I remember test patterns well. We used them to adjust the picture.

Test patterns were replaced with Billy Mayes and the amazing devices you can't live without....

My dad was a TV repairmen. Shop was fulla TV's. House was fulla TV's,. Basement fulla TV's. Garage fulla TV's. Something on in everyroom, anywhere I went. STILL to this day I gotta have one on 24/7. Can't take silence!
And right, take a test pattern over Billy anyday!

Re: another milestone

I also remember them.
Got up night before last at 3:00 AM to watch the Shuttle launch, every channel was chattering away about something, couldn't believe all the blather.
To bad the shuttle went at 2:30, I missed it. :p
(we have just gone from a very small 12 year old Sony trinitron to a 50" plasma, I thought a nite time launch would be awesome. Probably was!)

I remember when test patterns first came out. Beat watching the radio but the mental image wasn't nearly as good.;)

Re: another milestone

A night time launch on a tube, 12 inch B+W, or 70 inch Flat.
Hmmm..zero in the way of NOISE! And the crowd emotion.
Like watching 8000hp Nitro cars at a strip, or 4th of July "works"....on a "tube"
Not trying to be sarcastic here, but they have done great on the "clarity". but ...but so far, they CANNOT duplicate the "thunder"
And never will. Its a "air movement"...you will never duplicate the "sound waves" over a tube. Never
Think I'm wrong, go to an NHRA Drag Race (been at it 40 years...love the smell of Nitro in the "anytime"
Off the line, your WHOLE BODY VIBRATES, and ya better plug yer ears.
Crank the "Surround Sound" all ya want on the tube....
Ya aint gonna do Cheetos (knocks the cheese off) and no plugs at a "Nitro Car" real time...reality is outside the 4 walls.
I see it here in the HOA walking the monster. Massive TVs and 40-50 year olds. Slammed in the "leather", bag of chips. and most don't realize, they are already in the "Porch Rocker" that they think they will never need, after the 1/2 hour at the "gym"
Now, back to Billy Mays..."but thats not all!...wait..we will DOUBLE ..."
Ugghh..why I own 4 boats and 8 motorcycles..

I don't remember those at all, but growing up, my parents didn't allow any TV except PBS and even then only on the weekends. Although, every now and then a straight A report card could coax them into allowing a saturday morning with cartoons.

And right after the test pattern came the Blue Angles and the national anthem.

I remember my Dad had a middle 60's blue Studebaker Station Wagon...the one that had the sliding rear roof panel. Needed it for the "larger" TV's..that took 4 people to load:eek::D
