The starter on my motor will not spin, or engage, or anything. I was looking at it and was surprised to find that only one wire connected to it: a heavy guage positive wire bolted near the bottom of the case (as the starter sits vertically). Where is the ground? Does the starter just ground on its mounting bracket?

I also noticed that the whole starter assembly seems loose in its mount. And again, I was surprised to find no bolts or brackets holding it in place other than where it passes through the bracket right at the top, near the drive gear. Should the starter be loose like this? How does it detach from its mount? I thought perhaps it twisted out or something, but I could only turn it about a 1/4 inch in each direction. There also seems to be a small spacer plate between the starter housing and the bracket it mounts to. What's this?

Ok, I apologize for all the questions. I know I should just buy a manual, but I just graduated from college and the funds are... pretty nonexistent right now. I'm keeping a list of all those who have helped me. Free boat rides for all of you once I get this worked out!

thank you
adam

Howdy Dostoy.

Your starter is grounded through the engine block, to which is connected the ground cable from the battery. If it is loose, you are surely without a good ground.

To test the starter motor use jumper cables from a fully charged battery. Connect the ground to the case and the hot to the stud that the one cable (large wire) is connected to. The motor should spin.

After you have the starter motor solidly connected to the block assembly, if you still have problems, go to the Engine FAQ seection and do the circuit troubleshooting steps in the "Outboard wont start" thread.

Good luck, and let us know what you find. :)

JB's got good advice on how to get it spinning.

The starter should be attached to the starter bracket by it's thru-bolts. These are the two very long bolts that start at the bottom of the starter, go through the backplate, housing and top plate of the starter, and then thread into the starter bracket. The starter bracket should be held on by three studs or bolts on the side of the engine and a large bolt into the front centre of the engine, just above the carburetor.

I hope this answers your question!

Yeah... thanks guys. If the starter spins when hooked up to cables, I'll assume it's not grounded properly and I'll pull it out and see if I can get it to seat in there correctly.

Appreciate the help....
-adam
