If you don't want to buy it online. (shipping is a pain on oil products) check at WalMart. Look for High Performance Gear Lube.

Is the High Performance the green stuff? That's what I had in it and the tech told me he replaced it with "synthetic".

One other thing. Most synthetic gear lubes allow water to seperate from the oil when just setting. The HP has additives that allow it to emulsify and basclly be milky and not seperate. That way if your drive does get water in it (especially salt water) the lower gears aren't setting in water only and rusting.

Re: Synthetic Outdrive Fluid

one thing i'm curious about... is if anybody has ever tried merc HP in their standard transmission (car). I thought about it a few years ago when i last did my fluid change but said screw it at the last second. My subie rex calls for 80W-90 in the manual transaxle... the merc stuff is about the same. Anyone ever try it?

Per synthetic, it will leak faster, if you have a problem seal.
Per the other answer, something got lost- has iboat server been having problems?

Ayuh,......

I do the inverse of your question,.....

I've been running Mobil 1, 75W-90 since the beginning in my Alpha 1.....

Like Don says,... The Syn-oil supports,+ supends the water,+ keeps things Lubed.......
It's Amazing how much water can be mixed with it,+ it's Still Sooo Slippery....

I've used that Merc Hi Perf stuff in my Cobra for years as per my mechanic's recommendation and it works great. You can get it around here for about 9 bucks a quart, maybe cheaper on line.

I wast just stating, that syn is so much better , that it will leak through a seal, that normal fluid won't. The stuff is slick!

Re: Synthetic Outdrive Fluid

A minor point / insight / clarification on synthetic oil and water... It's the detergent package that emulsifies the water and keeps it from settling out. MOST synthetic lubes are sold as high performance products, they have not only the benefits of being a narrower distribution lube oil mixture (synthetic and natural, they're all really a mixture of bunch of different chemicals), but also include a better detergent (think soap) package that increases anti-scuff properties (surface wear on gears) and better suspends tiny particles of metal from wear as well as small amounts of water. Cheaper lubes/oils have a broader distribution of oil molecules in them, are more susceptible to breaking down under shear and temperature, and do not incorporate the same detergent package as many higher end synthetics. There is an analogous situation with motor oils, only even more pronounced in terms of detergents...

and the high performance merc stuff has chemistry specifically formulated to deal with the unique problems encountered in an outdrive: water, aluminum breakdown stuff, to handle high shear loads and temps without breakdown and do a great job at suspending water if needed... I would be wiling to bet that although the other brand synthetic gear lubes will have similar lube properties, if you do have a problem with water, etc... the merc stuff will handle it better...

just my two cents...

Yea I agree with that last post. I think for the money you should only run the merc / quicksilver gear oil in your drives. ( merc and quicksilver = same stuff differant bottle )

Its fantastic oil and I was thinking about using in my New F 150 4 X 4 differentials.

Well, locally, merc HP runs $14 per qt. The same store has regular 90 gear oil on sale under a buck. Tempted to do some home tests to compare (like water mixing, etc) and start using the cheap stuff.
