Yesterday Joe was 10 years older than his brother, Pete; however, today Joe is 10 years younger than Pete. How can this be?

Rules:
Joe and Pete are the same two people yesterday as they are today.
Neither of the brothers were born in a leap year.
They did not change their names.

Good luck!

They are brothers, remember? No third or fourth people involved, only these two brothers.

It doesn't say if Pete is his brother.
Brother and Pete dont have to be the same brother (person) .

Joe's an astronaut who did a 20 light year round trip at 99.9% the speed of light? When he gets back it's the next day to him but 20 years later to Pete.

...that's all I got.

Ahhh, hold on now. The calendar 'date' of things wouldn't be affected. Neither Joe's nor Pete's date of birth has changed. Joe will always be 10 years older than Pete, at least by the calendar, which is what we currently use to judge people's ages. (Unless some other criteria is specified: such as "physical age").

What V1 0 said.

Of course the whole thing is hypothetical.

Actually it would be affected. Joe only lived for one day, the atomic clock with date functionality attached that you sent with Joe, only shows one day later, and Joe only experienced one day. AND, the theory of relativity also states that neither one can be a standard, as both are equally valid.

But, that's why they call it a brain buster. If it was really as easy as mike64 made it look, we'd all get it right off the bat.

Ah, the old rhyme we learned back in high school...

There was a young lady named Bright
Whose speed was much faster than light.
She set out one day, in a relative way,
And returned the preceeding night.
