what have i got?

i just picked up an old evinrude outboard for free. not sure if it even runs but the motor is intacted and not seized. i can't find the model number on this anywhere the only thing i found was the serial number which is 205B63B C92992. any help would be appreciated. it has a johnson motor cover on it so this makes it more confusing. lol. i did find a part number off the exhaust housing, but looking at the brp online catalogue, it says it's off either a 1973 or 1974 18 or 20 or 25hp. it also has what looks like little wings built right into the gearcase. these are not aftermarket but looks like they are actually molded right into the gearcase.

205B63 is a 1975 20hp Evinrude. Long shaft if I am assuming correctly.

EDIT: The first part is the model number, the second part is the serial number. The C in front of the serial says it is a Canadian motor.

not to argue, i've been looking at brochures for 1974, 1975, 1976, and they have no 20 hp. they go from 15 to 25. sheesh.. maybe it's a phantom.lol

Ha ha... Sorry, to laugh, but I finally found someone else with a mysterious phantom motor. My 1976 Canadian Johnson (20BA76D) doesnt exist either. I believe that 20hp OMCs of this vintage were not available in the USA, they jumped from 15hp to 25hp and since the majority of literature on the internet is from the USA its very hard to find mention of these motors.
Good luck with it, I love mine, reliable as hell and it makes my 14 foot aluminum practically jump out of the water when I crack the throttle.

Right, it is not a USA model.

thanks again for the help. lol. my main motor on my boat is also a phantom. it's a 1985 model 45hp commercial johnson. but i can't find any parts for it until 1986. back to this 20 hp i just got. has anyone seen one with the stabilizer built into it? perhaps another canadian thing?

Yes, I do remember those funky fins on the 40hp motors for a short while. Either they weren't put on the portable motors or I don't remember them. They weren't well-received on the 40, I do remember that. People visualized the great big gob of water weeds that they would collect down here in the swamps and just laughed at how rediculous they were. Or ground them off.

they are goofy looking. one has just a little bend in it. what i can't get over is how small the motor is for 20 hp. and i don't think it ways even 100 lbs.

I have a 1976 20hp. evinrude built in peterbourough ontario.I just use a 1975 25hp evinrude original manual since it is practically the same motor and lu. 22 cubic inch

Paint it green and thats my Johnson. Probably has the AC lighting plug on it?

Yes it has it. What is it for?It says it on the cowl by the starter

oh for sure. like i said earlier, i just picked this motor up. i got a lot to do yet. at least it's galvanized. lol.
