Is it possible to identify your engine year with just a serial number? My Johnson Seahorse 15 came without the I.D. plate. There is a number stamped on the transom mount iam assuming this is the serial number can you identify the year with this alone? is there another spot where the model number is stamped? Please Help ASAP. Thanx

Welcome to iboats!

If the transom plate is gone, remove motor cover and look on the power head for a quarter sized alum. disc. On the disc you'll have the model and serial numbers.

Those numbers sound like casting numbers....no help
The CD2 581926 is the ignition module, so your motor isn't THAT old...
If you can't find a silver disc on the power head, can you post a picture of your motor??

BTW, here's a pic of silver disc "Welsh Plug" courtesy of Tashasdaddy

Does it look like the one in the thumbnail attached?

If not, what color is it?

Well, the motor may very well be from 1977.

You can go to the parts store and compare the parts and their numbers to be sure. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Just click the picture of the parts diagram, then navigate to your motor.

BTW, I have edited your photo to show where the ID plate should be. Could it be painted over?

Definitely looks like 1977/1978 era. By 1979 they had the black encased coils in place of the ones with the exposed laminates...

Is it a good year. I just got it. It runs but iam gonna have to take it in and get tuned up for sure. Is it worth the money and time or should i just buy a new one. Do they perform well?

Its a great motor. Shouldn't take much to tune it up. Replace the water pump impeller.

Re: Please Help Me Identify My Johnson Seahorse 15

I have an identical 77 15hp for a trolling motor on my boat. I bought it this spring. First time out I lost the powerpack. Probably just a fluke, it was cheap too at under $60. The thing runs like a top, and starts easy. parts are still available, so I would hang on to it, or if you want to give it away, PM me and I'll send you my address :D

Iam having problems starting it. It sounds like it wants to start and i know it runs. What could be the dilemma? It has new spark plugs too.

Re: Please Help Me Identify My Johnson Seahorse 15

Dirty carb, low compression or weak spark are the 3 things that will make it hard to start.

Re: Please Help Me Identify My Johnson Seahorse 15

Thanks Steve. Are cleaning carbs tricky? Is it possible for plugs to be bad when they look shiny and theres no carbon build up present? And How sure are you guys that its a 77' seahorse 15? Would it be safe to buy a manual? And EZEKE the nameplate is completely gone.

Re: Please Help Me Identify My Johnson Seahorse 15

I don't know my modern years very well so don't look at me for the year.

as for the carb, they're easy to clean, buy a carb kit ($30 or so) and replace all the gaskets and key parts, use carb cleaner and blow it all out with air. The hard part on those engines is the re and re of the carb.
