A few things come to mind...

-Check the condition of the rear mounts. If they are soft or deteriorated, buy new ones.

-You will need an alignment tool in order to reinsall the engine correctly.

-While it is out, clean things up, check the condition of the various hoses, etc.

Not sure what your budget is or how much of a rebuild you were ready for, but sourcing a new block would not necessarily have to add a lot to the overall price of a complete rebore-pistons-rings-valve job rebuild.

Do you want a permanent, proper fix, or a halfass fix by throwing some kind of epoxy over it and hoping for the best?

Re: Mercusier 3.0 4 cylinder

See if you can find another 3.0 and have it rebuilt or maybe find a good running used engine. I saw a guy on Ebay selling what looked to be nice used 3.0's, he was out of Ohio and had several of them listed.

But, since your engine is gone make sure you want to keep the boat. Here's my sob story... I blew my 3.0 last December and decided to rebuild the engine instead of getting another boat as I knew the boat was mechanically sound, outside of the engine. A few weeks ago I was ready to install the engine and decided to replace the wet foam that's under the floor. Well,,, now I'm looking for another hull to put my rebuilt 3.0 into since the old tri-hull isn't worth the amount of work to rebuild the stringers and floor,,, possibly transom.

Once I find a nice Vhull to rebuild (as I would have to do with the tri-hull) I should come out with a nice boat. Would it have been easier to part out my old boat and invest the money into a different boat? Who knows, it could have been as much or more work dealing with someone else's problems...

Depends on how much you want to spend and how good of an engine you want. You can pick up a new engine for $2k, roll the dice on a used one for $5-800 or rebuild. I rebuilt my 3.0 for about $800 ($400 for machine work, $400 engine kit and assembled myself) but am probably up to $1200 after replacing the starter, water pump, fuel pump, hoses, ignition, etc, etc.

If you can find a block for $100 I'd go that route, but finding a 3.0 block is going to be the tough part as it is a marine specific engine (1 or 2 piece rear main seal???).

Don's question above will deserve a closer look. I think what Don's eluding to is that there are a couple of options that may be worth trying. Although they fall into the "half a**" catagory...could be an option....even if you just get through the season.
There are people on this forum who have had varying degrees of success with different kinds of epoxies.
Could be worth a try.
Good Luck,
Mark

I don't know if I would do the epoxy trick on a block being rebuilt, kind of doubt the machine shop would even warranty the work.

If the engine was in the boat and it was a last ditch attempt to seal a water leak, then by all means slap some glue on that block and try to seal it up :D
