Re: Flywheel puller

Any auto parts store will have a harmonic balancer puller ... get one and replace the bolts with GR8 bolts and washers.

Hi wilde1j
that's great- I was asking around for a flywheel puller and that seemed to confuse people. I can see my local store has a harmonic puller for only $20!

do not for get the proper size Grade 8 harden bolts, standard bolt will strip of in the flywheel, messing up the thread.

I used the same type to pull of my flywheel 70 evinrude. I had trouble until I was told that you might have to use a breaker bar to get the necessary tension to the bolt so one tap of the hammer will pop it right off.

:):) I must admit i have never used a puller yet (the shame of it ) i just slack the nut off till it is level with the top of the thread and get someone to lift the engine buy the flywheel and pop it with a hammer comes off every time  mind you cant do this on the bigger ones of course.

Re: Flywheel puller

No offense intended, and you obviously have been successful, it would appear. However, that is terrible advice. Done right it works, done wrong it destroys. If you have seen as many destroyed crankshafts from novices using that method as I have, you would know.

Also, while on the topic. there is more to it than getting the flywheel off. You have to put it back on correctly or you will cause more destruction. The shaft and flywheel tapers must be clean and dry and you must use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to specs. I believe it is 40-45 ft/lbs on that motor, but verify that. And don't think for a minute that you can guess the difference between 30 and 40 pounds. Again, doing it wrong destroys expensive parts.

Re: Flywheel puller

if you do not do as F_R says, you will be done it again, as the flywheel key will shear, or worse.

well I must have done this and screwed up. I cant seem to find the right thread bolt. I cant seem to them to thread all the way in. I am afraid that I have messed up my threads. If I have what should I do.
I have retapped or redied them, I feel really wooped when it comes to this engine. I can do most everything on an auto, but I am having doubts on an outboard.
So what do the experts recommend.

HELP Please:redface:

Re: Flywheel puller

I see Boblester is from the Uk. The method he describes for removing flywheels is the recommended way for British Seagull engines. He must have been brought up with those. :D

You think he is joking about the weather. Summer this year was a few days in May this year IIRC.
