The last few days I have been feeling worse and worse. I noticed an uncomforable sensation when urinating, that was getting stronger since Saturday night. In the office today, I had I could do to keep my mouth shut when using the urinal. And I had a 100*+ fever.

I called my doctor, and left work. When I got to the docs office, the took a urine sample and told me, "good and bad news..... Good news is your are not "sick", bad news is you have blood in your urine. ." He reached between my legs, pressed up on my prostate and I was in serious pain. "Yep, its your prostate!!! " WHAT?????

He asked me if I was riding a bicycle lately, fell and got hurt, etc. I remember Saturday afternoon, my neighbor got a new huge St. Bernard dog. When I wasn't looking, the dog ran up to me, tucked his snout under my crotch, and flipped me through the air and I landed on my back. Extreme pain. Got hurt pretty bad, but I shook it off and took the kids home. Told my wife how I got hurt by the dog, my privates were aching all evening.

Turns out that monster dog injured my prostate, and its bleeding (slightly) and I am now on antibiotics for the resulting infection and fever, and pain medication so it doesn't hurt so much every time I go pee (which is like every 15 minutes ---- OUCH!!!!) Doc said I should be feeling better in two days or so.

Sunday, when I had the slight burn, and the itch, I should have gone to the doc. Not waited until Tuesday afternoon.

Listen to your body.

Been there, Mark. Had a case of prostatitis that hung around for months and finally put me down for a spell.

Amen to "pay attention". If it hurts it needs fixing.

Re: Listen to your body when it tells you something is wrong...

it's easier to listen to your body when you have health insurance....... and theres a lot of folks that don't...... last time i went to the doc (8 years ago). it cost me 10k out of pocket, darn near ruined me financially + the doc put something in my file (something about being dead in 2 years for some blood issue that i obviously didn't have) that prevents me from getting health insurance w/o a real whopping fine for being uninsurable..... i'm on chips now but about gonna have to get out of that for the $759 a month i have to pay out. oct. it goes up AGAIN.... health care in the 'good ol usa' just ain't that great and something needs to change. i'll be on my death bed before i go give my money to them xxxxxxxxxxxers....... i'd rather be dead and have my son have what little bread i got than give it to the rich so they can get richer.....

be glad ya can go to the doc mark, get well soon.....

I hope you get to doing better man. I had colitis 4 years back, which I know it is different from your situation, but it darn near killed me, high fever and all the works. I kept putting off going to the doc, when I finally decided to go to doctor medcare the doc told me that he has seen dead people look better then me. They put me in the hospital I had to have an MRI I think or CT scan. I was out of work anyhow due to the plant being updated, but I spent all week in the hospital, couldn't stay away from the bathroom.

I also know about those big dogs, I have a black lab which I was playing with years back and I was laying on the floor when he stood up on his rear legs and he pounced on my stomach. I was black and blue in the area he hit and going to the bathroom wasn't pretty. I didn't go to the doc about that one.

This cost me about $50. $30 co pay at the Dr. office, and about 20 for medications. Not too bad, but its $50 out the window by no fault of my own.

It does pay to look up your simptoms on the internet sometimes, and realize something like a mild case of tendinitis will go away if your rest the affected area, take some ibuprofen to reduce swelling, etc. You will be fine.

BUT, if you have bad internal pains, parts of your body just don't work right, you forget what your doing, can't hold onto stuff, etc, its time to pay up and see the doc.

Darn health care is getting more expensive every year, and covers less.

I really don't like the idea of "universal health care" idea either. I think its too socialistic.

For U.S. residents, just recall how well the govt. handled the Swine Flu epidemic. And you want the Fed. Govt. to tell your doctor how to treat you under National Health Care?:(:(.

Any thing that is totally free will be abused. I was a Pharmacist for 30 years and saw the abuses from the people that had unfettered totaly free health care. Stubbed my toe? E.R. and free Vicodin. Child has a cough? E.R. and worthless antibiotics prescribed. The cases I handled and the abuses are endless.
The one and only time in my life when I was admitted to the hospital for diabetic crisis,I recall the druggies in the background screaming that their wait was too long. Why is this "new" sick guy in front of me. I was in a mental haze from blood glucose level over 959,but I still remember the idiots in the E.R.

Stories like this make me really appreciate living in Canada. Our health care system is far from perfect, but I believe most anyone can afford basic medical insurance here. The fees are reduced for low income persons. Mine is covered by my employer, including my extended coverage. If I had to pay for basic coverage myself, I think it's around $80 per month. (Don't quote me on that though.)

Do you think things will change soon? Isn't medical insurance a campaign issue being discussed? I seem to remember hearing one of the candidates talking about this on the radio.

Public housing is another good example of government incompetence. They build new housing, put people in it - instant slum.

I live in Spain where we have universal health care, if you work, or are a pensioner you are entitled to health care. It's not free, i pay a fixed rate per month to the governemt which part of covers my health care. I'm fortunate in that spain has the one of the leading health care systems in europe, we have short waiting times for non serious operations, immediate surgery for anything serious, 24/7 local emergency clinics...

I really can't fault it.

I've had experience of private hospitals, every single time you could see the doctor or surgeon was always looking at the economic side of it, how much can he get out of me or my insurance company. With the national health service they just get on with sorting out your problems.

Just my point of view from someone who's not really known anything other than national health care

Yeah, get well. Like JB, I had a run in with prostatitis too and it got worse becasue I was ignoring it. A very uncomfortable flight home from England convinced me it was time to go to the doctor. Had I listened to my body earlier I could've prevented a pretty long recovery . . .

Drink lots of water. I'm 49 and never been hospitalized-ever.

I don't plan on it either. I've been to the Doc. plenty of times for self inflicted boo boos.

I don't get sick, I don't have issues.

Watch your diet and excersize. Just a walk, several times a week will help. If you don't break a sweat, you're just "strolling".

As far as health care goes, I will say this. Phoenix, where I live, is covered up with Canadians getting procedures done that Canada told them they could get in five years, or so, if at all.

Re: Listen to your body when it tells you something is wrong...

You guys should all have a prostate exam, and PSA blood test done now or anytime your pee pattern changes. I was in for my heart checkup in April this year, and my Cardiologist asked if I had had a PSA test done recently. I hadn't ever had one so he ordered one. When it came back, it was very high (low is good). One thing lead to another (finger exam, biopsy, etc.) and I found out I have Prostate Cancer. I had surgery in May to remove the Prostate, and we found that it was 76% involved, but the cells were encapsulated and the surrounding Lymph Nodes were clear. The point of my story is that all you guys should get checked out no matter what your age. Pay attention to changes!!! My next checkup and scans are sometime next month, and then every 6 months,so we'll just have to keep an eye on things.

Well, I've been healthy as a horse till I got past 50, it's all been slowly downhill since then  Even though in my mind I'm 25 :D But, as much as I try to ignore it, my body keeps telling me I'm old!

National health care, is so Wrong! In a perfect world, it would be Great, but just look around at the pathetic way that good ideas get "fubared" up in this country.
