Hi guys, I hope one of you can help. I have a gamefisher 9.9 that sucked up some sand and overheated. I cannot figure out for the life of me how to drop the lower unit to change the water pump. I took the four bolts off but there is something else holding it. I see no way to access anything on the gearcase to remove what I think is the shift rod that is holding it. Does anyone know how to drop this lower unit? It is ~1993-1995 model and ran perfect until yesterday. Since it is in like new condition I want to keep it. No one wants to work on it so Im kind of stuck fixing it myself. I also need to replace the head gasket so if you know the torque settings that would be a bonus.
Thanks in advance

If it is like the older ones, you need to put it in reverse. This pushes down the shift rod. then you pull on the lower unit to get about 3/8 inch gap in between it and the midleg. You reach in this gap with (usually) a hex Allen wrench and unscrew the Allen head cap screw that holds together the upper and lower shift rods.

Thanks Frank! Exactly what I needed to know. I'll give it a whirl and let you know how I make out. Thanks again.

Forgot to mention: If the head bolts are 1/4 inch (7/16 heads) then the torque should be again, on older units---130 inch pounds. Sounds like a lot for 1/4 inch bolt --even grade 8-- since standard torque value is 70 inch pounds. So, best if you double check.

Re: Gamefisher/Force Lower Unit removal

Thanks frank! Once I knew what I was doing I was able to take it off in under five minutes. The allen bolt was on the left side near the front.

I believe the head bolts are 7/16. Do you know where I can double check the torque requirements? It's hard tracking down a service manual for this engine or any information. I was hoping the head gasket would come with instructions but I'm not holding my breath. (The engine is like new so I want to do it all correctly.)

Also anything tricky I need to worry about when changing the pump? Should I change the driveshaft seals also? Im not sure how long they last for.

I believe its a gamefisher 9.9

My Allen head screw is at an angle. 2 o’clock from center, so I can’t access wrench. Any ideas?
