U hate MERCURY...

spent $77 bucks for a decal part number 37-13723 12 to go on the flame arrestor on my 1984 boat which is a mercruiser 260hp....

they sent me a decal that says alsp one 260/v8...

my decal just says mercruiser, 260, power steering, thunder bolt ignition.

we went through the part numbers with a fine tooth comb on here and seaway out of seattle sent me the wrong one and said well mercury changes them and keeps the same part number!

think they shoulda told me that b4 considering i told him i wanted the exact one etc..he assured me it was the same and they won't pay the $13 shipping for shipping it back to them.

what bs...don't use SEAWAY.

Call Merc, or get over it. My gawd man, it's a 24 year old engine and you are going nutso over a decal. Merc probably did change the decal at one point, and NO, they probably didn't get Seaways permission or tell them that the decal was different. Deal with it, and don't blame SW, not there fault if it has the right part number. Did you look at the decal and make sure it's the right part number? If it is, it's all yours, you ordered by part number.

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

To me what the hell good is a specific part number if the part with that number gets changed???

I explainedthe decal to the guy on the phone and told him I wanted it exact or I didn't want it he said sounds like the right one.

members on here I explained that this decal was hard to find etc. they accused me of not trusting them and "biting" the hands that was feeding me the info I wanted. (not blaming any members btw just saying)

nobody once said mercury changes their crap and keeps the same part number...hello looks like seaway woulda told me it MAY or may not be exact then it woulda been a gamble..and I woulda been ok with that.

so yes I do blame seaway the guy I just got off the phone with said "oh ya they change stuff around all the time and keep the same part number" WOW! if you knew that why after I explained how hard this specified decal has been to find etc..did u not let me know that THEN.....thats what I'm trying to get across to them.

now I'm out of $90.92 if you count shipping...thats thats 2 decals btw

In the future there are tons of custom decal shops in larger cities and of course on the internet. You provide them the info, template, photo or whatever and they can recreate the decal for much less than what you paid.

They usually make some change in the PN when a part changes. Usually in the last digits. -01 or 02 or 12 or 13 or whatever.
What does your decal package say?

I seriously doubt that the guys on the phone go out and look at parts. Probably wouldn't know what they were looking at if they did.

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

the decal package says "37-13723 12"

that is supposely for a 82-86 mercruiser 260hp...but this is the decal I see on 87's..which says alpha one and is wrote up different.

hell alpha ones wasn't put on boats in 82,83,84 or 85...we determined my 84 boat has an 85 outdrive and it's an MR remember?

so it would be stupid for me to accept this and stick a alpha one sticker on it. I'm just not going to do that.

*u said to maybe call merc..I see tons of numbers to mercury but what number would I call on something like this?

eveytime I tried to express I bet it won't be right several people would say something like this below.

*here was the response

"The part number you have been given, 37-13723-12, is for exactly what you want, not for anything newer or older... your 1984, 350cu in, 260hp, V8 Mercruiser.....

And if you still don't trust us, look at the attachment.. It includes the year, part number and even a picture of your decal...

Why are you trying to bite the hands that feeds you?"

There you go, that is the number Mercruiser (NOT SeaWay) put on it. If that isn't the right decal, call Mercruiser customer service. I'm sure they can explain first hand about why it's not the right decal, because none of us can do anything but look up part numbers, and we, like you, assume that if Mercruiser gave out this part number for that part that it is correct.

I'll take the blame for the 'biting hands that feed you' comment....

You have a decal, which is the right number, as per Mercruiser parts manual, for your engine...

IT'S...A...DECAL!!! What difference does it make anyway... Does it change the performance of the engine? If you don't like the 'Alpha One' part of it, get a black pen and mark it out.....

You must live one boring life if you're making such a fuss over a decal...

To duplicate a decal I just took a picture of what I wanted, and told the lady at the sign shop how big I wanted it made, and picked it up the next day. BTW my town is less than 5000 people, so you don't need to live in a big city. It may help get your blood pressure down. ;)

Ok, I'll try this but I don't have a scanner so I'll go to a place that does.

ok for this if I understand you right I will need to buy sticker/vynil decal paper and simply scan the decal and it will print out on the sticky paper and I just cut it out.

will it look half way decent you think?

will staples or somewhere like that do it for me or I guess I'll need to jsut buy a whole pack of sticky paper.

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

You won't like the result of doing this on a scanner, etc. It looks like you're trying to do a cosmetic restoration of this thing, since you're disappointed with the decal supplied by the OEM.

If that's the case, you're not going to like what comes out of an inkjet printer, either.

If I'm wrong about the reason for your pickiness about the decal, then never mind.

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

i make stuff all the time.
If you can't scan it.....
try finding a picture of what you want online and play with a photo editor like photoshop to get the size that you want.
It may take multiple prints (test prints) on plain paper before you put a sheet of sticky paper through it. I think you can get great results from an inkjet, depending on the quality of it. I make stickers and t shirt transfers all the time. And i have just a 3 or 4 year old 100$ HP. Nothing to special.
After the decal dries, cut it to size and hit it with a quick misting of spray polyurethene.

As CA Transplant mentioned above, the OP is looking for more than a ligned out decal or something created with sticky paper with a clear-coat. Good suggestion by CAPTJason but unless professionally performed using a vinyl product it probably wont meet expectations or be properly water resistant etc.

In his initial thread he did mentioned he restores Corvettes etc.. I have a friend or two that do the same and telling one of them "it's just a decal" would be like saying: it's just your wife, get over the fact I slept with her"... OK, maybe not that bad  but small items that contribute to the authenticity of a restoration are critical. Something they don't take lightly whatsoever etc. Many of us would not understand the time, effort and frustration that goes into this research.

Now, maybe the OP's tone and followup here isn't the best but attacking his "boring life" due to his desire to have an exact/authentic replica is not required.

Hopefully the OP will find/acquire what he desires.

Cheers

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

thanks guys..I'm not blaming anyone really after thinking about it even seaway is not to blame although if I had received a call if I worked there and the guy on the phone wanting the decal told me what I told that guy I woulda explained it might not be EXACT. but whatever it's done!

and the guy above is right I have restored several corvettes to NCRS specs....a lot of that goes into restoration a lot of original pieces and sorting through the net to match the NUMBERS up on parts I need by date codes etc...

I'm just that way I want it back original. I think the decal dresses up the engien bay so I want another one on it.

if it takes buying a high end printer and doing it myself I'll go there..

Re: like i figured...it wasn't the right decal!

I would take the old one to a vinyl sign shop and have them recreate it. It is amazing what they can do and I bet it is less than the one from merc.

That's just the type they're talking about. They should be able to fix you right up (and for much less than $90).

I can't believe how everybody on this thread was telling you to just deal with it. Clearly anybody who's willing to pay $90 for a decal, wants it to be authentic. Me, I'd just say screw it, even if it was a $3 decal.

Anybody who's willing to pay that kind of money, is going to want the right decal. Good luck with your restoration project!
