Let me say right up front that I don't know alot about motors of any kind.
Motor was warmed up already (we'd been out for hours)Starter turned quickly but wouldn't start motor. Motor didn't even sound like it was trying to start. I pulled the cowling and pulled on the throttle arm while my wife turned the key. NO CHANGE. (It worked all the time in my last one). We let it sit for about ten minutes and finally it started with the key only.

Any ideas on what could have been the hold up?

I'd hate to get stuck on the water sometime if ity can be prevented.

Only other info is that I had just unwound fishing line by rotating the prop. Might of been in gear at that time. Any help or tips to keep me confident far away from shore would be appreciated.

How long was the motor off?
did you try pumping the bulb?
Did you try bumping the choke when cranking the key?
did you try advancing the throttle ( in neutral) in case it was flooded?

I think its good practice to carry a toolbox with basic diagnostic tools, a spark checker would have helped indicate if the plugs were sparking.

Mthinks if you could spin the prop it was in neutral sure enuf.

Off ten minutes
Primed bulb, but didn't need it, never does really
That's why I pulled cowl and finger lifted trottle to make sure I hadn't flooded.
I bumped the choke.

Not sure I uderstand what your saying here. I have an OMC single lever with only the choke on the key. Any movemement either direction puts it in gear unless I unhook it from behind the shifter. I must be mis understanding your statement.

Prop didn't turn easy so instead of getting up and making sure it was in neutral I just rotated it about half aturn and started cutting with a knife.

I'm sure some of the heavyweights will weigh in here, but for now try pulling "out" on the throttle/shifter ( as if you where pulling the shaft out of the control box) do this from the neutral position. it should pull out about 1/2 to 3/4 inch, enabling throttle advancement without engaging the gearbox.

More likely, there's a fast idle lever, which ups the throttle in neutral ... usually on the top of the control unit. If motor was in gear, control shouldn't allow even cranking, much less running.

If you have an owner's manual, follow the start procedure outlined. If you don't have one, contact the Ken Cook Company at (414) 466-6060 to get a manual. ('97 and newer motors have free manuals downloadable from the BRP website).

I have the manual. When I tried to start it it was in neutral and turned over. Just no start. So I went to the back and moved the throttle myself. There is no fast idle lever on this one only a push choke. I've had a boat with the fast idle lever but this one doesn't.

Re: 91 J150GLEIS Stranded

I have a 94 J150, the throttle control ( on mine at least) allows throttle to be advanced in neutral by pulling the throttle control arm AWAY from the box , sideways, then advance it fwd, it will still be in neutral .
Try grabbing the throttle at the shaft where it enters the box and pulling from there, its got a spring to pull it back in.

What you did also works but would be dicey in a heavy chop.

I actually flooded mine by leaning on the ignition key, opened the throttle and cranked til it popped and closed throttle as soon as it fired.

This sound like how mine is set up. It is mounted on top the CC not on the side. Thank You.

This is not covered in the Seloc I purchased.

Wilde1j- The KEn Cook site has a parts manual and a "owners manual" . Is the "owners manual? a repair manual? It doesn't sound like it. The OEM repair manuals are hard to come by these days.

Well I hope it has a neutral setting, it would make alot more sense if it did. If it does, it's not obvious to me. This Seloc I got is crap. Very excited about the OEM book I ordered. I hope it's as good or better that the 3" 3 ring binder one that came with my Mariner. That book was GREAT. Made even me feel like a mech.

Re: 91 J150GLEIS Stranded

My 94 150 uses a center console binnnacle control also. It has an OMC binnacle which has a button on the left side. Hold in the button and slide the lever forward as you would while throttling in forward , only you will be in neutral, this is the fast idle. Pull it back to neutral position and the button will pop/ click out this would now again be your neutral idle position. They all have a fast idle I would think. Just a matter of the trick ( button or pulling leverup out or whatever) to get ya there. Figure it out and then you can stop pulling the cowling off thats a pain in the butt. I can see your wifes eyes each time it comes off.

Re: 91 J150GLEIS Stranded

I checked it out over the weekend and my OMC single lever does move over/out left about a half inch and allows up/down movement without taking it out of neutral.

I also got my OEM manual from ebay this weekend. It seems to pretty comprehensive (better than Seloc anyway).
Thanks again
