are there any pitfalls to bringing a boat and then leaving it up in canada. the lodge/campground is ok with it as we will be there twice a year to fish. i know we would have to winterise it when we leave it in september but, anything else i should be concerned with. we will be using it in june and then in september. it is a 1979 thundercraft with 140hp merc. the boat only has 50 hrs on it and i have removed the lounge seats and installed pedestal seats. thanks bob

if you feel secure nothing will happen to it. i don't know if Canadian law has anything to do with it. but you will have to keep the boat and trailer registered.

Re: leaving a boat in canada

Everything was looking OK until you mentioned you changed to pedestal seats, they aren't allowed in Canada.

As long as you don't sell it in Canada there shouldn't be a problem, they may not even ask any questions about the boat when you cross the boarder. People around here leave boats in Canada frequently, sometimes for the summer and sometimes all year. Depending on the person you speak to on the boarder, they may want to see paperwork on the boat and trailer, but frequently they just ask where you?re going and how will you be staying. I cross the boarder frequently, sometimes with boats and other times with commercial goods and rarely have any issues, always have all the paperwork ready and make sure you?re legal, but don?t ramble on and answer questions they don?t ask.

mphy98,
You can't believe everything that you read on the internet.
I don't know why on earth he would make a statement like that, but it is incorrect.
I own a boat with pedestal seats, bought and licensed it here.
I am at marinas and boat dealers constantly, who sell all kinds and configurations of boats with pedestal seats. Just do a search on Canadian Boat dealers and check out their stock.
He may be one of the tourists who show up here in July, with skis on their car, or just has some other reason to slam Canada. :)

.

Oh ****, I had better sell my boat before the pedestal seat cops find out!!
Where on earth did you hear that one?
mphy98, you have nothing to worry about as long as it's insured and you have permission like you said from the park owner. I see absolutely no worries, unless your boat's name is "Canada sucks" or something like that ;)..........Irv964

Maybe the pedestal seat thing was a joke? ;) Anyway...I'd second the insurance recommendation. Make sure your carrier knows you are leaving it outside the US for the winter. They may not care, then again, who knows how insurance companies work...

Sorry, I thought the Pedestal thing was absurd enough to be recognized as a joke.

If you intend to leave it permanently in Canada then you may get a call from customs for duty or GST.
I know someone who got that call for taking a boat to USA on vacation. The border didn't register it coming back into the country.

my i suggest a garage thingy to store it under, or at least build some type of support for a tarp.......

td has pics of a good system that he built.

since no ones going to be around......there is no one to clean the snow off and make sure the tarp is all as it should be.

so when you put it to bed for the winter....wrap that sucker up good

Now that's hilarious!!!!:p

Check into the insurance thing. Where I summer at my campground, several folks from PA leave their boats there for the winter. Have it wrapped and winterized and you'll be ok.

As long as you wrap it to keep the snow out and the tarp from collapsing, it's all good.

Someone mentioned leaving it permanently in Canada may be an issue (duties, etc) I'm not sure this is a concern as you'll still have it registered in the US (trailer/plates) so its still a US registered boat. You should only deal with that if you transfer it to Canada.

You simply want to be covered for loss from damage or theft is all.

how high are the pedestal seats? because i don't think that as an american you can have a boat with higher pedestal seats than the highest pedestal seat owned by a canadian on the lake. so if they are too high you will have to lower them, move to another lake or bring the boat home. this rule only pertains to americans that leave their boat in canada over the winter.

Re: leaving a boat in canada

YOU GUYS ARE A RIOT. :D i have only 9" pedestals. I know because of the way i measured them that they are exactly 9". They have a thick base as well. but i suppose the the canadians will always say theirs is longer and wider. but we are talking about pedestals here aren't we? i will be leaving it there but using it twice a year, then winterizing it. i don't know if i really need insurance on it as it isn't worth all that much. maybe 2k at best. but it only has 50 hrs on it and everything works including ther HORN!!! Is it a requirement to have insurance in the northwoods der hey? we are in wisconsin and liability is all you need on cheap boats here, but up there do i need even that. not much traffic up there. thanks guys, this has been fun for a boring day at work. bob

Bob

Check your homeowner's policy. As it is up here in the Great White North, Eh!, we have boat insurance by default in our policy. However, the caveat is, regardless of what happens, its insured to a max of $2000 (that's 2000 loonies, not those funny green things you folks carry around:D) so I'm not sure if/what value your policy in WI might cover, possibly less. Worth a call to your agent.

Come to think of it, our dollar is worth more, if we sell it for scrap metal than those US dollars.

And, to set the record straight, marquette was bang on. We've had to ask the 2-3 families from PA who leave their boats here year round up on our lake to lower their seats. They had 7 days to comply or we'd threaten to sink their boats and melt their summer igloo:eek::eek:

mphy98- you should be ok because i believe the measurement is 2 Molson cans high from the deck to the bottom of the seat is the allowable height.. you can go higher if you pay the "free beer for every canadian on the lake" fine twice a year. since you plan on being there twice a year you will be ok.
