this week Seattle WA had a major snow and ice storm. so much so that the police and fire departments cannot get to emergency calls. why? because Seattle will not allow the dpw to use salt on the roads to melt the snow. Much of Seattle is hilly by the way. According to news reports they are going to hard pack to snow down and this will help front wheel and four wheel vehicles get around. the plows have a rubber bottom so scraping is out of the question,(might hurt the roads) according to the TV reporter. the reason they wont use salt? WHY? because it might leach into Puget Sound!!!!!!!!! which is salt water by the way!!!!!! so as your house burns, or you are being robbed in Seattle, blame the wacko's because they do not understand that you can add a little salt to a salty ocean water and it won't affect a thing. we are in the great white north, next to one of the largest bodies of fresh water in the world, and have used salt for decades. It hasn't hurt a thing. Can you believe this? The reporter was clearly ticked off. but as the world turns>>>>>>>>>>>>>>:)

Guys it is part of living in the northwest....The powers that be are what they are.....:D OHHH I COULD have some fun with this but due to the nature of our more sensative forum i will leave the kewl *** out of the discussion...:p

In Portland they shut down I-5 at peak rush hour to scrape the road's......backed up traffic for more than 10,000 people for 4 hours...;)

They are now experiencing a small revolt....;)

Why not plow the snow and sand the roads?

Trust me the words "Salt reduction area" makes most people pucker up here in VT.

Why does someone from Wisconsin feel compelled to rant about how a totally different part of the country deals with things? Get a life, change the channel to History channel.

A number of years we visited relatives in the Seattle area. I had never heard a city having the weather forecast broken down by elevation. Above a certain elevation was snow, between two elevations was sleet, and below an elevation was rain.

"Round here we use tons of salt, mixed in with a bit of beet juice. Doesn't seem to hurt us a bit.

What do you have in the back of your F150?:p

A bit of levity here. What is the most boring job you can imagine when Portland streets are clogged with deep snow?

Re: has common sense been lost in seattle?

This snow thing in the NW needs a little more explanation.

We normally don't get a great deal of snow in the more populated areas near the water and along I-5 like Seattle, Tacoma and Everett, so there's far less equipment to remove it, or handle the problems it may create when compared to other parts of the country. Plus one of the major issues is as OldePharte, mentioned, we have a far wider range of elevation than almost any other city (or part of the country). The Seattle area covers elevations from sea level to more than a 1,000 feet, that's why the different forecasts

I?ve driven in most parts of North America (that includes Canada for those that don't know where it is) during winter months and with all the hills we have here it's much more difficult to get around than any other area I?ve been to. It also never gets extremely cold, it drops into the 20's snows several inches, then warms up to around 32 or a little higher during the day and melts some, then freezes again at night. This gets repeated for several days and we end up with roads cover with icy, slushy ruts.

Ice and snow, no removal equipment, numerous hills, cars with bad tires, and drivers with little experience driving in it, all contribute to the problems we have.

Puget sound is a mixture of fresh and salt, the levels vary from fresh to salt much like the Chesapeake bay, its a very fragile ecosystem. to say its a salt water body is way over simplistic. Its a estuary between the cascades mountains and the pacific ocean. The wild life that lives in it at different points require different levels of salinity.

You know what I find funny? Checking in to see what aspect of environmentalism gets your panties in a bunch any given day. ;) If you're not whining about global warming, you're moaning about something else that rubs you the wrong way, which can be something as simple as the fact that liberals have the audacity to exist on this earth. You probably complained when they took lead out of gasoline and stopped selling DDT too.

Re: has common sense been lost in seattle?

I'd rather they didn't use any de-icer on the roads here, it corrodes aluminum and steel like crazy. It only takes one trip in the winter to get white spots all over your new aluminum hull from the chemical de-icers and I'd rather drive on compact snow than slushy, crusty pot hole filled snow with de-icer on it. Think of all the money we'd save and I won't mention any politcal views on some of the "ideas" here on the left coast.
