Trouble starting my Johnson 9.9

Hi,
I recently bought my first boat. It has a 1993 Johnson 9.9 outboard motor that I am finding really difficult to start.
I have been taking it out about once a week for the last 4 months ( I bought it Oct 08) and it has been a pain from the start.
It will start after a few pulls initially (never straight away) but when I stop, it takes forever to start again.
I have tried taking the cover off whilst I am stopped to let the engine cool. I have tried disconnecting the fuel line just before I stop to let her run dry and not flood with petrol. I have replaced old spark plugs with identical new ones.
I think that I am running her on the right mix.
Any suggestions would be gratefully received as I really enjoy going out on the boat but, its worrying & frustrating when you think that your not going to get back.

I would definitely soak and clean the carb and use compressed air to clear all passages and go from there

Hello there. There are so many things that can make a motor hard to start it is really difficult to say. The link above is to the FAQ part of this forum. Review all the articles in it and pick and choose the items your comfortable doing. The mix you need is 50/1 and you must use fresh gas. I would suggest re-setting your needle valve and I also agree that a carb. kit would be in order as well as a new impeller. You say it's been difficult from the start so it could have been sitting for some time and needs a little TLC. Setting your carb. to open at the correct time is also important. Read all the posts and there is an article by the machinist that I feel is a must read for any 9.9 owner. Get started at what you feel comfortable doing and keep us informed of your progress and don't be afraid to ask questions. You should also get a factory service manual for your specific year and model. It will pay for itself many times over and give you a basis to ask educated questions in your journey. A 9.9 is a great motor provided the compression (checking it is a must) is reasonable. Best of luck. Rick.

Hi,
Thanks for your replies & your suggestions.
When you say soak the carb, what do I soak it in?
I will have a go at what you both say, I think I do need to get a manual.
Thanks again

"I think I do need to get a manual" Excellent idea, you can get one here at iboats or on Ebay if money is tight.

Get the paper OEM, not a Clymers/Seloc or anything on CD, the OEM covers your motor and nothing else, the others cover a range of engines and don't go into much detail on any of them.

They are a little more but pay for themselve the first time you use them and they have an excellent trouble shooting section.

Concur with the dirty carb , it takes suprisingly little to gum up a carb.

A 93 has jets that need to be removed and cleaned, should be 3, idle, mid and high speed, your manual will tell you exactly where they are, use a stranded copper wire to clean them, pull back strands till it just fits inside the jet.

I use Deep Creep(in a spray can) I get at Autozone to clean mine and the air in a can works really well if you don't have a compressor.

If your carb has a plastic top and bottom be careful when you tighten it down since they are easy to split.
I soak my carbs in paint thinner for a couple days and then blow it out with compressed air then shoot it with carb cleaner. Dump the cleaner back in the bottle when your done because its still good.
