black rather than light brown. i would do a decarb.

Decarb, take a can of seafoam put 3/4 of it in the gas tank, with only 1 gallon of premixed gas. put the rest in a spray bottle. start the engine, and let it come up to temperature. then remove plugs, and them some real good shot of seafoam into the cylinders, replace plugs, let sit 15 minutes. restart, and spray the rest of the seafoam into the carbs, so the the motor almost stalls, wait and repeat until the seafoam is gone.then take for a wide open spin. then put in new plugs, ad premixed gas to the tank, and take it for a wide open throttle spin. it is going to smoke like a house on fire, during this process.

A few questions first. Were the plugs new when you started? Did you run the boat long enough the fully warm up the engine then make a 1 minute full throttle run, shutting the engine off as soon as you came to a stop or did you drive it in and load it on the trailer first? Plug reading is a science which can be depended on only if done correctly every time. Yours are very dark, could be excessive oil, too cold, or idled too long. As TD says a decarb might help but running the test correctly is the only way for anyone to tell you accuratly.

Thanks randy, for telling it like it is. "Reading" spark plugs has more or less gone out the window with modern motors, and any two-stroke for that matter if not done with consideration for operating conditions. I'll double-dog guarantee that if I were to go out and pull the plugs out of my own motor right now, they will look 100 times worse than those in the pictures. But the motor is 24 years old and the plugs have only been changed once and they didn't really need it then. And it runs perfect, usually at idle all day. Of course all that idleing is why they are so crapped up, but who cares.

No, they're not new plugs & I've been doing some idling...so a decarb is in order.

I guess what In was concerned about was there is a lot more shine to the #1 suggesting "steamcleaning!" But never having seen a steamcleaned plug, I do not know what I was looking at. I did a compression check, both cylinders at 125 :)

Probably goes under the "Ain't broke, don't fix it!" ...not that I was even about to tear apart my head (No pun intended!).

True steam cleaning from water in the cylinders will clean them up clean as a whistle if it is going on any length of time. Of course, it is destroying the piston and cylinder at the same time.

you are fine, do the decarb with the old plugs, then put new ones in for another 15 years.
