Re: Dumb & Dumber

Yes I read that.

I has seen the same thing happen here on Lake Champlain about 20 years ago..... the only way people knew they were drifting was because of the direction of their lines in the ice holes.

It was nice weather compared to what we have had so I am not surprised...... I bet we will see a repeat of this again this year.

that could have been a lot worse..............and he was complaining about the money it cost ............it shouldnt matter how much it costs if you can save lives.

Every person that crossed the bridge should have to pay an equal share of the rescue. They are finally starting to charge the skiers that get lost in a area that has been roped off to keep people safe. There is no way my tax dollars should be used to pay the rescue costs of people that deliberately put themselves in danger.

I almost could have became one of them, my brother and I were thinking of giving it a try that day, but our friend whom was going to guide us couldn't make it so we gave it up due to lack of experience.
This stuff happens every year one time there were a bunch of SUV's stuck out there along with their owners.
Too bad there wasn't a tugboat or something close by that could have pushed the berg back in to close the gap.

They are back out there right now!! They are trying to retrieve their snowmobiles and atv's. It was just reported live on Fox news. They are stupid and the reporters are saying that they were told not to go back out there. One of the fishermen said that there is no law keeping them from getting there stuff back from the ice. I guess they had to leave everything when they were rescued. I would not be supprised if something were to happen again and they have to be rescued again. They should be fined this time if so! Just my 2 cents

Easy for you to say it's not your stuff out there, I would be out watching my stuff like hawk too, waiting for winds to shift back onshore, it's sad situation for the guy who paid the ultimate price though.
Like they say there's no such thing as safe ice.

The ice floe was 8 MILES LONG ! There aren't enough tugboats on the entire Great Lakes system to move an ice mass that big.
The cost of rescuing pinheads who venture out like that is one issue, but by far the greater issue is the danger posed to the folks who have to go out and rescue these potential Darwin Award winners.
Putting your life on the line to rescue a victim of circumstance is one thing, doing it to rescue someone who is trying to recover a skidoo or other replaceable item (lost due to their own idiocy) should not be in their job description at all.
As someone said earlier, a life should be valued beyond any price....and that includes any of the stuff abandoned on the ice floe.

You're kidding...right?

Re: Dumb & Dumber

Quote from the article:

Asked whether there are signs or other notification systems to discourage fishermen from going out on the ice under risky conditions, Bratton said there are only Web sites fishermen can check.

"We will go back and look at that," he said. "We can't develop the attitude, 'Go out on the ice. If you get caught, we'll be there to get you. We'll bring you in.' You've got to have common sense."

Where I'm from, even if there is open water, we would never think twice about the possibility of there being an ice floe, let alone an 8 mile long ice floe!! Common sense or not!! Also, UNLESS you KNEW about said web sites... how can you state lack of common sense as to them being dumb, stupid or otherwise?? The bridge thing makes me wonder, but what if there was a mile or 5 mile wide strip at one end to begin with? A person could have driven on to end up on the same ice floe without even knowing there was a chance of it breaking off.

On the other hand, all we have is ponds compared to Lake Erie so I guess all I can do is be glad I wasn't vacationing there and wanting to catch some fish... otherwise I wouldn't have known better and could have been one of them.

Re: Dumb & Dumber

I routinely check weather conditions before I go out in my boat. If the actual conditions or forecasts call for wind/weather that is dangerous, I find something else to do with my day.

When I was a kid, and we lived in places where pond skating was available, we watched the temperature closely, not only on the day that we wanted to skate, but for the previous days too. Again, if there was a possibility of danger, we didn't go.

So, how hard should it be to check on conditions before you venture out on the ice to go fishing?

Most ice rescuse are dogs and there owners. Not ice fishermen you think these guys would put there lives and all that money at risk i highly doubt it.And to the ones that are crying bout tax dollars being used up thats exactly why we pay them. And the ones that will be getting charged are the ones that are rescued over and over.People should be glad that it was a huge rescue effort instead of a huge body recovery.Besides it really does fall apon the state as most of these ppl fish from a state park pretty simple close down the park if the ice conditions are not safe. But see these are goverment agenceys and if they cant do it backwards at the highest cost possiable its just not right. And that local police cheif is a joke bottom line. And part of the blame falls on odnr for allowing people to use the state park not like this is the first year the lakes froze this event happens every year just not at this scale.

If you have actually listened to the interview with "that local police chief" I don't understand why you would call him a joke. He and his extended team working in conjunction with the USCG rescued 150 people. The system worked.

But his post-rescue comments were absolutely justified..."I have no problem with people ice fishing, but these idiots should realize that when you see open water, you should not build a bridge and cross it," he said. "It's a shame you can't arrest people for stupidity."

What would you find fault with in that statement?

Re: Dumb & Dumber

Actually i have heard this guy on the T.V one to many times. And if you were a local like i am you would of seen that he did say that he was out of line calling people names and he did i seen it on my local news. And as far as him being a joke i said mainly for his B.S comments.Like i said this event happens every year according to the Cheif so smart money says close down the parks were 98% of these people park and its problem solved right? No were going to send an officer over there to warn you the ice may not be safe today. But we can call an odnr officer to close down the parks so they both share in the blame.Bottom line sorry if you dont like my point of view that i feel a public offical shouldnt open there mouths under anger reguardless of the situation there and how many times its happened in the past.Again close it down and this issue will be fixed. But they would rather moan and groan when they have to make a rescuse becuse there comunity is hurting for cash and a 1000 fishermen drop some cash so well just leave it open right and take our chances then complain when we have to pull you off the ice sounds exactly like the goverment...

One of the news sources reported that the Sheriff DID make a list of those persons removed from the ice, and that if any of those persons again need rescue from the ice then they could/would be fined.

the lake i fish has taken many hometown fishing veterans due to sudden weather changes.

i agree with the fools getting a fine for going back out there.........once should have been enough.

i like my toys but i dont have one that im willing to orphan my kids and make my wife a widow over............come on guys its material you can buy more.

No, it isn't why we pay tax dollars. We pay tax dollars to have a safety net for people who have made prudent decisions, but have fallen victim to a situation that could have reasonably thought not to be a safety factor. The ones that do dumb things, like driving their snowmobiles out onto ice sheets that are obviously breaking up, waste those tax dollars to the detriment of everyone else.

We also don't have local police departments and park rangers, to play the role of mommy and daddy to a bunch of adults, who don't have enough sense to avoid a situation that is clearly dangerous.

Most of all, we don't have rescue agencies like the USCG, so we can risk the lives of their personnel, while retrieving foolish people from obviously avoidable situations. You may not think that conducting rescues is dangerous business, but there are a few of us here at the iboats forums, who have actually done them numerous times and can tell you that it is. In fact, even the things that we did in training and everyday operations, were often dangerous.

While we understand that you are just expressing an opinion, don't forget to consider all aspects of a situation. Its important.

The latest story on that ice flow, what their not telling you, turns out there was a ship that went through busting up a 100yd swath of ice which caused the whole thing. A buddy was telling me about it, said you could see right where the ship went through on GPS satelite view.
I haven't heard anything official so far just heresay.

goto boatnerd.com and youll see the c/g report they claim they wasnt in the area untill 1.30 pm.altho fishermen says 9.30 am and islanders say noon. All 3 have conflicting times but of course all the goverment agenceys place blame somewhere other then at there doorstep. And your right my tax dollars shouldnt go to rescue those guys they should go to incompident state/local agenceys for not closing the parks.Espically when theres a cutter in the area come on thats just asking for trouble call me crazy but when you cut a 300 ft path into a solid sheet of ice theres going to be an effect much farther then that 300 ft path.Common sense would tell you that and a brisk south wind should also click in that common sense thing and tell you to stay off the ice today.Thats half the problem with this country is that public officals are not held responseable for there actions. From the bottom all the way to the top.rime against one of these people and they will lock your can up and throw away the key. This all boils down to the all mighty dollar if they close the parks the 400 plus fishermen will take there money down the road and go fishing...I,m done replying to this thread we all have our opinions and im cool with that. some of you dont agree with me and i dont agree with some of youBeside dont worrie bout all that money that was spent its just paper we'll print more and all will be good.

Re: Dumb & Dumber

The passing ship information is interesting, but it doesn't explain why those who went out onto the ice, ended up there after going over a bridge. Seems to me that the ice was obviously breaking up, regardless of any ship.
