Land rover 12 mpg city /16 mpg highway uses premium gas

4runner 15 city / 18 mpg highway regular gas and my wife gets 22 mpg highway

The jeep is not even in the equation. The money she will save will cover the insurance.

The landcruiser is the top of the heap when it comes to 4x4's. The 4 runner is a more simple suv. Both are the best in their classes.

If the vehicle will be used for commuting, general usage and good fuel economy, i would suggest perhaps a Rav4 or a Honda CRV.

If the subject is about off-road capabilities, the Land Cruiser is second to none, however fuel economy would not be in this equation.

vlad; she has looked at the others to. a satern vue, a suburu out back, and some kind of smaller chevy suv.
she is going from a front wheel drive car and it got a round ok but she had trouble all the time getting on and off strees and in parking lots and in snow over 6". she wants something heavier and more ground clearance but dosnt want a full size suv[i tried to get her to look at a yukon or 1/2 ton pu. .
personaly i havent followed any of these and dont know much about them. i'll pass this on to her. she knows more about the different brands and models at tn=his point than i do,

Whys that? mpg is 16/21. A land rover is a POS next to a Grand Cherokee ive had mine for 4 years and have changed the oil and fluids and havent had any other problems. Im not going to argue towards the toyota they are good trucks. The previous year zj 1993-1998 grand cherokees gave them a bad rap and they completely redesigned them in 1999. The only common problem are the climate controls if you have the setup where you control temp on each side. The transmission is the same as the dodge ram. the rear end is a dana 44. 4.7 v8 is known to last just as long as the inline 4.0. 148k and going strong. (knocks on wood)

Not as "cool" as a 4-runner, but Rav's and CRV's are great little cars. I think I'd buy a CRV for my daughter. Good on fuel, easy to park and store, fits 4 and is rated well.

Same here. We currently have 4 jeeps ranging from a 94 ZJ to a 06 WK. WK has the hemi with quadra-drive and its a beast. Wouldnt trade our Jeeps for anything. :D

Kinda hard keeping up on all the maintenance with them though. Gotta make sure to keep the tranny fluid changed and ONLY use ATF+4 if you want to keep the trannies going. Try to keep the diffs changed every 30k so thats 8 diffs that I take care of. Also have the tcase oil..

ohh, and the wj's do not have the same tranny has the rams if you have the 4.0. They have the 42rle which is at most a decent tranny. Take care of it and it will last along time though. One of our 4.0/42rle combo has 170k trouble free miles. It also tows a small 2000lbs bass boat and a 3000lb camper from time to time.

.. the LR is smaller, aluminum body and a 4.0 V8 that doesn't have to work as hard being a smaller SUV. the mileage on mine has been more like 15/22. but i keep mine, as one put it, in fanatical shape. many owners on this class of automobile tend to maintain them better. the Toyota 4runner has the best resale at about $5000 and reviews very well, it probably has a target of owners that are also well informed and maintenance conscience. the jeep GC's will cost you the least at about $2500 coming in bottom of the rung, and seeing this post probably gives some idea on the clientele it attracts. a LR for a daily driver may not be your best fit for your daughter. the Toyota, or as others mention, smaller brands like Subaru may do well also.

Re: ranger rover or toyota

Don't buy a gas Toyota or Range Rover/Land Rover. The diesels will return 50% more MPG minimum-just avoid the 2.4 litre Toyota diesel. Go for the 3 litre.

Don't know about over there, but over here a Land Rover Discovery is very cheap for parts-most are made as pattern by Lucas/Girling.

BTW, we hate the Jeep Cherokees over here. They devalue so fast you can buy one for ?500 without looking hard. The diesel motor is awful and the petrol engine drinks fuel.

Do we have diesel Landcruisers in the US? I know there are a lot of diesels in the EU, but they don't always pass our smog standards.

They pass Japanse smog standards, so should easily pass US ones.

I'm not sure where you made up these facts but my 4.7 v8 sure does put out alot more power than the 4.0 in the LR and a jeep grand cherokee is much lighter than a LR. and even the 4.0 pushes around a grand cherokee better than the 4.0 in the LR due to weight. the land rover engine puts out 188hp or 218 if you have the top of the line vs 265hp in my grand and the regular 4.7 puts out 240 and a 4.0 I6 puts out 195 all jeep engines. jeep curb weight 3614 land rover 4434...the best land rover vs the best grand cherokee the jeep has an extra 50hp and is 1000lbs less. even when you compare the base inline 6 grand with 195hp vs 218hp in the top of the line landy when you compare weight the land rover will work much harder.

BTW just buy the Toyota I doubt she cares about these things and it will last longer than any Jeep or Landrover.

Its pretty clear this would have been a good thread for a poll on the choices, just to keep it simple.

Re: ranger rover or toyota

up date; the jeep and 4 runner sold be for we could look at them and the person with the LR hasnt ever gotten back to her

were now looking at a 01 and a 02 4 runners and 01 yukon and 00 tahoe. last a 00 nissan xterra.

i still would rather see her go with the yukon or tahoe but the 4 runners are still at the top of her list and i'm not going to push her into something she dosnt want. the 4 runners are both private partys and the rest dealerships

thanks so far for all opions we have gotten a lot of good informaton and has helped

I think any of those listed would be a good choice but I still say the Toyota will last the longest with the best resale value. Good luck and stay away from the stealerships.

Yukon/Tahoes are much better vehicles for towing than the Nissan Xterra which is one thirsty little puppy.
