i took it out yesterday. man it was awsome.

well i couldnt stop the lean sneezing this motor made. especially at about half throtttle and down. wide open was great. oh yeah i noticed that i had a wrong spark plug in the motor it was like ql77 some thing. and i had a j4c. so i went to the store and bought 2 j6c spark plugs for it. the ql plug kept hitting the cylinder and was bent a little i noticed. im sure nothing damaged

my main problem was that i couldnt really stop the lean sneeze unless i took the low speed needle and turned it out maybe 3 times. it just kept sneezing at 1 1/2

anythoughts? carb maybe?

did you clean and rebuild the carb? if not there could be crud in the low speed seat, making you have to turn the needle out more. is the point of the needle sharp pointed of blunt.??? 1 1/2 is also just a starting point.

yes i rebuilt and cleaned the carbs and i stuck a paper clip up the low speed jets to clear em out if somethign that didnt want to come out and ill check the needle sometime today or 2moro

oh and i tightened that screw that holds the packing so that there was no air leaks. i may add that i tightened just so i could turn it but just when i got a good grip and it wont move form motor vibrations

You haven't said if the needle tip is groved. That will do it. So will an air leak into the crankcase (Main bearing seals). So will premature carb butterfly opening (sync). Or butterfly not closing all the way. And then I could go into the really bizzare stuff.

I suspect a dirty slow speed jet, a vacuum leak around the carb or intake manifold, or a fuel line crack, etc. Try spraying a little fuel mix into the carb throat while idling and see if it smooths out, or getting a little propane torch and spraying the propane gas around the carb and intake manifold area and hoses and see if it richens the mixture and smooths it out. That's been helpful to me in finding vacuum leaks.
However, if it idles 3 turns out nicely, I'd leave it alone.
Looks like you've turned into quite the mechanic coolguy---impressive!

Re: 1959 johnson supersea horse 35hp w/elec. start

lots of reading ill tell u that. thanks

ya the reason y i found it that it wouldnt idle down is when doing a decarb i forgot to take the little plastic pipe from the deep creep got stuck and opened the butteryfly a bit. fix that today. and its ok for me to turn that needle out that far?

i dont think its a dirty carb but might be that i cant bring the needle out enough hopely? but ill hold on the propane torch:eek: yet will i might try some slight wd-40? around it? or maybe some water in my hands and put dorps aorund there?( the mainfold seal)

i checked the needle and it was nice round needle and looked perfect

before i torqued the flywheel i check and see that it reached wide open and everything was synced the right way. like i believe it was the line on the roller and the one on the motor or somehting liek that

well i just found out y the motor wont idle the right way. cause i have an exhuast leak!!! its coming from the seal between the lower unit and power head.

so what i did was wash all the dirt and oil off as much as i could. found some foam junk in a bottle and started going in all the cracks around the gasket. hopely it will sot the exhuast from comeing in. ill have to look at it 2moro and see where it expanded ina and where do i need to apply more. it was kinda dark so i stoppped. anyideas? the running runs greta with the door or cover off though and i can exhaust coming in from the seal

That seal gets blamed a lot when there is an exhaust leak and the motor won't idle or run right. And sometimes it truly is the fault, such as when idleing at the dock in neutral and the exhaust is bubbleing up around the housing. In gear, the exhaust goes to the rear in the prop wash.

However, in most cases the real culprit is the o-ring that goes on top of the water pump housing has been left out....or in the case of a long shaft motor the spacer and o-rings that go around the drive shaft have been left out. When any of those parts are missing, it will send smoke up under the hood big time. It goes up through the tube that encloses the drive shaft and out a vent hole at the top, which is inside the hood area.

i made sure to put that o ring on top of the drive shaft. i know that the seal aorund the lower unit cause when the boat is on the water i can push the boat in the water up and down and hear a breathing of air through there.

i can see it coming through the lower unit.

Re: 1959 johnson supersea horse 35hp w/elec. start

its alright i wasnt really gonna go through the trouble of getting stuff

my thought was to use a combination of things. i tried the foam thing kinda seemed worse maybe cause the exhuast from coming out of pressure now. well im gonna cut an old hose in half and put it between the rubber stuff hopely it will make it tighter
