Hello,

I am new to this boating forum and I am basically just looking around for different ideas to do to my 18hp fastwin. First off I own a 14ft valco that this motor currently sits on. It moves it decent but not quick enough when loaded with 3 ppl. I don't expect it to move fast either lol with that many ppl on board. But I have taken it upon me to basically make this a project motor for myself as for I want to learn more about these motors. My questions are what are the cylinder wall thickness on these motors and how far can u bore these motors over? Also, has there been any models of these with electric start? or would I be better off finding like an old lawn motor starter with the correct tooth and fabricate a bracket for the starter to be mounted? This motor has lasted me and my dad 20 years still running strong. I am avid fisherman and hunter and this motor has just been through hell and back with me at the controls lol. Been a great motor but now I have a 16ft g3 with a 90/65 evinrude etec jet on it and its been my main boat, but am looking to rebuild the 18hp evinrude as a little fun motor for the 14ft valco. so any help is appreciated thanks. also is it even worth diving into the 18hp fastwins?

just look for a good used 25HP.
Or get a carb and reed plate off a 25.
the 25 is the same bore and stroke as the 18.

It may be a regional thing, but around my area, a good running fresh water 25HP J/E in mint condition will usually sell for less than the parts to do any rebuilding.

There was a 25 Rude at a local auction the other day sans lower unit. I didn't stick around to see what it went for but I would guess $5 or $10.

The rope pulled over and felt like good comp.

Go here:

http://shop2.evinrude.com

Compare parts numbers for the 18 and 25 models for that year. That will tell you what parts are required to change from one to the other.

It probably isn't worth the trouble. 25 hp models from the early 70s are cheap enough that you can repower easily. Sell your 18 and buy an equivalent 25 and you're set.

Every year, about this time, dozens of people stop in here to ask how they can hop up their outboard. It can be done, but you can also ruin a perfectly good outboard in quick time.

What we don't see, though, are people coming here and telling us how they've done the hop-up and how great and easy it was to do. There's a reason for that.

When you're talking about 35+ year old outboards, it's generally a lot easier to just sell the one you have and get a bigger one. I'm just sayin...

What is the indicator that it needs to be bored out. That model of the evinrude was a very reliable motor. There really is no hot rodding to accomplish on a 1972 motor.

Some good old down to earth maintenance will help that motor more than anything else.

Trying to create a frankenstein motor is not advised. BTW the 25 HP runs over 1000 rpm more, has VERY different internals and pistons. The 18 hp pushed like that will just grenade in a short time.

You say that motor has been a loyal servant for 20 years?

Why on earth would you want to screw it up?

Yea this motor has been loyal to me for a lonnnnnng time. There really is no reason to hop this motor up except for the simple fact that i like to tinker with stuff lol. The motor itself stills has good compression and all i think the last time i checked was 100/107? been a couple of years. I was just getting ideas and info. Is it even worth gettin the starter for it then? I appreciate all the info. lol i think it was about this time last year i wanted to put an 650 jet ski motor in that boat but found it that the ribs on the bottom caused to much air to be sucked up through the intake of the boat so i chucked that idea. Anyways thanks again guys for the info.

BTW, yes, you can get an electric starter for it. They made em for the 18hp from 1956 on...

instead of screwing up a perfectly good reliable motor, buy yourself a project motor and go from there. buy a 3 or 4 hp, go thru it. you will learn the basics of the 2 stroke motor. i warn you, it can be addictive and become a great hobby.
