Does the cooling work in neutral or is the impellor mowing with the propeller?

Depends on what you are working on. Almost all will pump in neutral. Many antiques won't pump in a tank with the propeller installed.
Important thing is the motor has to be deep enough in the water. The pump needs to be submerged before starting.

Knowing what you are working on would be a big help.

How come??

Some of the older Johnsons (and other motors) have a pickup tube behind the propeller and the force from the propeller while the boat is in motion, will send water up that tube and into the water jackets. A good example is the Johnson SD-16 built before 1948. Many old Johnsons prior to this model will also have this set up. There are no impellers at all, on these motors, so make sure your propeller is installed.

I was thinking of the ones with centrifugal impellers. The water in the tank is all roiled up, coming from all directions, and full of air. Short story is the centrifugal pump just doesn't like such conditions. It needs solid water coming from the right direction, with no air to kill the prime.

so as long as the intake holes are covered by a few inches of water it should be OK to run in a tank or large bucket ....right....would be the same as sitting at the lake on the back of a boat, with the jack plate in the up position ???

Looks like about a 1978 Johnson 6 hp. Your motor pumps water in neutral and while running in a barrel.

Nice 1958 10 hp by the way.

Yes, the older Johnson/Evinrude design is so beautiful.

Unfortunately I have no spark on this one. It's my future object

Probably the coils. Very common for them to fail from age. Parts are still available for it, too. In fact, the entire ignition is the same as your 6 hp.

Soo, I just scrap the 6 hp and move the ign. system to the 10 hp? Maybe going to far, but do you really mean it's the same system. It's 20 years between them!!

No, sorry. They were the same until 1976. 1977-79 had CD ignition. Its called the "universal magneto" and was used on several models from the early 1950's and into the 1990's. By the mid 1970's most motors had evolved to CDI. Only the smallest motors continued to use the old style magneto components.

So the bigger question is: "Is the motor cooling in neutral/in gear?" If not, it's time to replace the impeller and root out the problem.

If the impeller is operating right, it should cool in any gear even in neutral. The impeller is atached to the main drive shaft and is turning the same direction, anytime the motor is running.

The marine dealors and Napa stock the coils found in the old 10 hp.
