Siphoning Fuel

I have a 08 Chaparral Sig 290 Cruiser and the fuel tank is equipped with an anti-siphon valve. Is is still possible for someone to siphon fuel through the fill line? I had filled up the tank (or so I thought) and 3 days later my tank was a 3/4 full. My boat is on a lift on the water and our neighbors have had fuel siphoned from their boats, so I think the thieves got to mine. If the valve is supposed to stop all siphoning, then could I just have a faulty fuel gauge?

The anti-siphon valve prevents fuel siphoning into your bilge in the event of a break in the line.

It has no effect whatsoever against somebody armed with a length of hose and a free-lance socialist attitude.

Thanks for the info. I guess I will just have to keep my eyes open and my Glock loaded! As long as socialist governments don't take away my 2nd amendment rights!

If the fuel line passes through a lockable area of the boat you could install a fuel shut-off valve in that area and keep it locked. There are lots of easy ways to extract fuel but I won't discuss them here.

Yup.

There is simply no way to stop a determined thief.

All we can do is make it more trouble than it's worth, hoping they will go off in search of easier prey.

Don't you think it might be a little easier to just install a locking fuel cap than to kill someone over a couple of gallons of gas?

Last summer I was also a victim of gas theft (about 60 gallons!).
I did some research and found a product by Vetus called the Spider. It's essentially a plastic web that prevents a siphon hose from entering the tank.

Here's a link to their catalog. The spider is in the upper right. It can be zoomed for better detail.
