Yeah Ohio - Finally getting rid of the asinine 55MPH Interstate speed limit, for trucks. Way past time. Oh happy day!

Boo Ohio - 12 OHP with radar guns in an 80 mile I75 stretch (Saturday), on a short holiday weekend. Heavily working the construction zones, even though the road workers were not present. Went through KY,TN and NC and saw a total of 2.

The speed limit has been 65 on the Turnpike for a couple years now. I just love seeing the boards that they screwed over the "55" part of those huge signs they made back in the late 80s! Glad to see them do away with the inherently dangerous and traffic congesting split limit everywhere. It might only take me 7.5 hours to get to Medina, now! (instead of the inevitable 8)

That is not an unsual amount of Gestapo for any weekend in Ohio. I can bet you a $1000 that within 5 miles of entering Ohio eastbound on I70, you'll see your first!
We have governor Gilligan to thank for the most overpaid, useless, traffic control force in the world. The OHP is a huge waste, but they are firmly entrenched, so they aren't going anywhere.

Your state needs to be next, for increasing truck speed limits. :)

Our government has just made everyone put restrictors on all trucks so they can not go over 105kph.
You guys move forward we take a step backwards !!!

Yes, you are right, to a point. They don't really need to raise the limit, cause they don't enforce it now. Just if they just leave it alone, we'll be okay.

Second, Illinois is not "my" state, I just happen to live here! :)

Ken, get ready for increased traffic congestion!

Yeah I hate to have to adjust to the slower speed limit when entering OH. It feels like you're crawling when you have been doing 75+ and then having to obey the 65 limit. I wish there are no speed limits, I wish cops would pay attention and ticket the way people drive instead of how fast they drive.

Progress:D Being Ohio's neighbor Michigan tries to set a good example regarding these issues(70mph). I lived in Cincinnati for one year and dreaded the border heading south..."You are now entering Ohio!"(slow down or get out your checkbook)

I don't travel the interstate much, but today I did. To me it makes a big difference with the trucks moving with the flow of traffic. Before when 2 trucks had to pass one another, it just bottled up the 4 wheeler traffic. I still like taking back roads when not in a rush to get there.

Yuck! Throw the bums out and get the law repealed?

It's really more about large carriers, strong-arming the small guy, than it is about saftey.

The ATA, tried to get similar limits (, but in MPH, of course :) ) here. Luckily, they did not.

No doubt some places use speed enforsement to make money. Problem is that there is a direct relationship between fatalities and speed regardless of how skilled the drivers think they are. Ask any highway patrolman and he will say that by far most fatal car wrecks are related to speed.a fact

Re: Yeah Ohio - Boo Ohio

Actually, speed is a contributing factor to fatalities. Accidents can and do happen at every speed, and are caused by drivers, not speed. Ask the Florida Highway patrol, who commissioned a study in the early 90's trying to show that speeding caused accidents. The study revealed that speed doesn't cause accidents, people do. But one thing they also discovered was that "speed differetial" not all out speed was more of a contributoyry cause to accidents. That means, having two segments of traffic moving at different speeds in inherently dangerous. That is why Florida did away with split speed limits, and has the same limit for cars and trucks.
True, the higher the speed, the great the impact forces, and the greater the chance for serious injury and death. That is physics and a fact. But very few people die in car accident that shouldn't. The cars are just constructed too well.

Could be worse. Several years ago the coal companies here (they run the state) got the wvdot to increase the weight limits on many of the roads in the coal fields from 80,000 lbs to 120,000 lbs. Problem is many of the roads and bridges were not designed to handle the 80,000 lbs to begin with. No problem! The coal companies don't have to pay for repair or maintanence. Taxpayers do! Sorry, did'nt mean to stray off subject.

Yep....higher speed limits for trucks. Has a down side to. This week a truck rolled over a mini van with three children and wife and husband. By some good fortune, they all survived. After rolling over the mini van, the truck skidded for 100+ ft. to a stop. Really wild thing is, this all happened on an up hill stretch of I470.......just coming into Ohio from WVa. We all like the higher limits but, it does have it's down side. Be careful out there no matter where your at.

But OBJ, speed alone didn't cause that accident. There was certainly an actual direct cause (Drive Error is the most likely). And while that hill is STEEP, only sliding 100+ feet to a stop, means the truck wasn't going all that fast, at that point.
All I am saying to you all is that higher speed limits are not inherently dangerous. Drivers are dangerous! Higher speeds do reduce reaction times, can cause some vehicles to be less stable, and increases the forces involved with accidents. But just as you noted, the people in that mnivan survived. You know why? Cause cars are built very well for the most part, seatbelts work wonders, and airbags are great when used in conjunction with seatbelt.

BTW another new law for the state is when wipers are on, your headlights should be on also. Common sense says that is a wise thing to do anyway.....

The last time I was in Arkansas visiting the grandkids I turned on my lights when I turned on my wipers. My SIL asked if that was a law in Indiana too. I replied, "No. Just common sense."

You can't legislate STUPID out of existance.

I think most truck-4 wheeler accidents are caused by bonehead drivers - in the 4 wheelers.

Some will get into one of the trucker's 3 blind spots, and ride there forever, often irritating other drivers who need the space to pass. Others will suddenly swerve in front of the truck and either hit the brakes or lose it and spin out, setting up a terrible crash. I saw 2 cars in one week drive under the trailer tires of a semi turning right.

You can't fix stupid.

I get a kick out of the wide grin, thumbs up, and sometimes a horn greeting received when I see a semi turning my way, and stop well short of the intersection so he can swing wide and avoid tearing up trailer tires climbing the curb. It just takes paying attention, sometimes called defensive driving.

Hey John, try driving an armored truck for a living. People still turn in front of you, speed past you, cut you off, ride in your blind spots, etc... but when you come to a bank or store, and they realize you have a handgun in your belt, they tend to get out of your way! :)
