Hi , I have a 1965 Evinrude Sportswin 9.5 that me dad has had since new. I took it out this weekend (after about ten years) and it would not tilt in neutral, only in forward. Is that the way it should be or should i adjust the cable so that it tilts in neutral? Also should it stay up on its own once tilted and go down with pressure? Right now it come down on its own unless i engage the tilt lock. Should i tighten the tension nut so that it stays up on own. Thanks.

My 73 will only tilt in forward. I've heard some say it should tilt in neutral as well but forward is fine with me. Rick.

It is supposed to be adjusted so it tilts in neutral, but not reverse. One thing that will foul it up is broken rubber motor mounts.

Try tightening the tilt bolt to increase the down friction. But it might not help. They have a funky ratcheting friction cone in there that isn't the worlds greatest invention.

Re: 1965 Evinrude 9.5 Tilt question

Thanks guys,

I found an old thread that said that motor was supossed to be that way (tilt in forward only) so that the motor doesnt move forward when pulling to start. I really dont see that being an issue, and that was the only one saying that so im not sure if thats correct. Most others say in both forward and neutral. It doesnt seem right to only tilt in forward since when you stop or dock the boat you put in neutral. It really threw me off this weekend because i was trying to tilt in neutral and thought something was jamed. I since adjusted the cable and it now tilts in forward and neutral, but not reverse. When i first checked the cable and latch i found that when in neutral the latch did move but was just barely touching the bar preventing tilt. A slight adjustment was all it took. I also tightened the tension bolt so it does not tilt as freely. I'l have to see how it is next time i take it out..

Nuts and phooey! It is supposed to tilt in either forward or neutral but not reverse.
