Plenty of fishing room in that big hull:)

Are you going to have a top above the console? Great spot for rod storage if you do. Great work, you're lucky to have such a skilled carpenter helping out.;)

Yeah. eventually we will put a t-top on there. That's still quite a ways from now. We're gonna take everything out now, clean, and apply the Gluvit.

Like the other thread, it depends on how you want to fish. I like more space behind the console when trolling with down riggers, the space in front of console gets used for storing gear when trolling, its not a fishing space.

For casting with a few people, the bow becomes a fishing space, so the console may need to be more centered.

Moving it back gives ?you? a better ride, because as you move back there is less up and down motion in rough water. It can also make it slower to plane, bow rise is not good when trying to accelerate.

How tall are the hull sides now that you raised the floor, as the water gets rough you?ll want the sides high so there?s plenty to lean against.

The sides of the hull are about 1-2 inches above my knee.

I wanted to suspend the boat in the air so I could strip the paint off the hull but, I didn't know if the paint stripper would work. I decided to hold off on the boat suspension and test out the paint stripper.

I applied the first coat of paint stripper with a brush. I read from other members on here that the paint stripper really burns if it touches skin. So I decided not to find out for myself and wore eye protection and gloves.

Then I used a pressure washer to remove the paint sripper and paint. I think I waited like about 2 hours before taking it off. Here's how it turned out ofter the first coat.

I decided to apply another coat and see if it would take off the remainder of the paint.

It really didn't do much. I waited for 2 more hours before taking it off with the pressure washer. It almost looks the same.

I think I'm gonna stop by the automotive paint store on my way back from work tomorrow and see if they have one that will remove all the paint down to the aluminum. I couldn't find the one that was suggested from the previous post at HD or Lowe's. We'll see tomorrow.

I found that a 0 steel wool pad, along with aircraft remover, easily removes that paint. I know it sounds funny, but it is really called Aircraft Remover. It works. Your pressure washer immediately washed away all the paint solvent. Approach it with an unrolled 0 steel wool pad, and you can really clean it off. Wear protection.

Yeah! It's really called Aircraft Paint Remover. I was reading the back and it says, "Do not use on any aircraft."

Should I glass the transom?

Or, should I just put it in without doing anything to it.

I wouldn't glass the transom.. sacrilidge!!! Glass on a aluminum boat ??

My floor from the mid 70's is a little lower than what you have now, I like what you're doing, but it also makes me a little sad seeing it.. I would never do that to mine.. i'd get another boat. If your thinking about replacing the transom, definatly CPES it.. I used a 2 qt kit and it came out really well. 50/50 mix of 1qt to each side. It's very very strong now. I would also think about CPESing the Floor and stringers, they will last a lot longer.

By the way.. I couldn't quite see but was the cabin window still in the boat when you got it ?? do you have it ?? Is/was it glass or Plexiglass ??

thanks
Brian

I considered leaving it as it was, but I wanted a center console. I couldn't find an aluminum cc near my area.

The windshield is glass. Yes I still have it.

Now that the deck has been fitted, it's time for the transom to come out. It's completely rotted.

I wasn't able to get pictures, but the engine was taking out using a fork lift because the engine hoist wouldn't cut it.

The transom was taken out because it was like paper. Here's some pics of that.

Pulled the trimming up just enough to be able to get to the screws underneath it.

Then the screws came out.

There is some corrosion that ate up the aluminum. I don't know how I'm supposed to fix it, but I will put JB weld on there in hope that it will hold up.

I'm not gonna restore it. I'm gonna take the engine and outdrive out and throw the hull away. :(

After the transom came out, the new one came together using 2 exterior grade 3/4 plywood sheets. They were glued using regular weatherproof carpenter's glue. Then they were screwed together using zinc coated screws.

Nice find!! What is the make and year of the boat? It looks like it's in decent condition.
