Filling swim platform holes in transom

I recently purchased a kicker for my 21ft Reinell, which means getting rid of the teak swim platform on the back. There are 8, 1/2" diameter holes in the transom that would need filling. They are below the waterline obviously so I would like them to be really sealed, and also would like to prevent the transom from rotting near the holes.

So I was just wondering if anyone here has experience with filling holes in fiberglass this size and what the best approach might be. I was thinking about making sure the holes are super dry, and just using white silicone caulk? I have done fiberglassing before but on holes this size I dunno if it would be worth the trouble. Appearance isnt the top priority...

Thoughts?

they make fiberglass swim platforms with kicker brackets on them.:D

or you can fill with marinetex or 3m 5200 and sand smooth. Do not use silicone or you may get a sinking feeling.

I prefer to fill holes this size with tight fitting hardwood dowels even if I have to increase the size of the holes to get achieve it. Leaving the dowel slightly depressed on the exterior side helps retain material used for filler. I totally agree with the previous posters that Marine-Tex is really good stuff for this task. The main reason I use dowels is they completely fill the hole on the inside of the transom where the hole may be inaccessible. Good luck!

I take regular home insulation and soak it with resin then poke it in the holes. If you can reach, back it with cardboard or tape. Leave it slightly below the gelcoat to allow color topping. If you are concerned with dampness, a hair dryer will concentrate enough heat on the spots to dry the immediately surrounding wood and the resin will bond.

I've never done this but it sounds like a great idea.
