I am trying to locate (even identify!) the dial-bore-indicator to time my 79 115.
Does anyone know what this gizmo is and where to find it?
I understand what it does, just don't have any idea where to find one.
Thanks

Re: Where to find dial indicator

Dial indicators measure the distance from the top of the piston to the head. They are used to exactly set the piston .464 inches down from top dead center. I use a caliper to set the timing pointer on my Merc. It is not as convenient as the dial indicator, but can be accurate.

Harbor Freight. They have the magnetic mount also (works threaded into a hole too). Used mine on several things, including timing my 115. Not a premium quality, but it works.

Geez....that Snap-on product that's linked to seems to be something completely different.

Can someone provide links to "middle of the road" dial indicators that will work for Mercury engines?

Better than Harbor freight...but not "industrial grade"?

Thanks!

It sure is, it is a dial bore gauge what that needs to be set correctly is size blocks with gauge ends set to the bore STD size, then you check the bore for over size, taper, roundness. Fowler makes a decent dial indicator for the money and they are not expensive. I have several in my box in the shop and they pass calibration every year....
