All .40 caliber ammo the same?

This is going to sound like a dumb question, especially from a guy who carries a weapon every day, but here goes.

My service weapon is a Smith & Wesson M&P 40 caliber semi-auto pistol. The company gives us new ammunition every so often, and we can keep the old ammo. So my question is, would I be able to use the S&W 40 cal ammo in a different brand 40 caliber semi-auto? The S&W M&P 40 is not cheap (least I have seen it advertised for is $599), and I thought if I could find a used or even new gun, that was less expensive, I might buy it, and be able to have my ammo for free.

Thanks in advance.

Yes. 40 Cal S&W is the same 40 cal used an weapons of that caliber (except a 10 mm)

Why does an "Auto Damage Appraiser" carry a weapon? I was under the impression that the "pen was mightier then the sword"

All that old .40 ammo is worthless. I'll pay shipping and dispose of it properly for you :D

Thanks for the answer, Bob. And thanks for reminding me to change my profile! Occupation should read "Armored Truck Driver".

JRJ, the "old" ammo are hollow points, and I just really want to make big holes in something, but I don't want to spend a lot of dough to do it! I am not sure of the exact replacement schedule, but a guy that has been there 2 years just got all new rounds a couple months ago. So I might get some in less than a year... that would give us 92 rounds to make a mess! :)

Ammo from WWII still goes bang just fine if it has been stored properly so your ammo stored properly will last a LONG time.;)

BTW...... this happened to a friend of mine in 2002 doing a similar job so be careful ;) http://www.fbi.gov/wanted/seekinfo/rutland.htm

Yeah, I knew the ammo would still be fine, but the company doesn't want to take any risk that it would misfire or jam in the weapon. Also, since the messengers wear their extras on their belts, the rounds and the cartridges can "rust" a little, over time.

That article is interesting, but would be nearly impossible to happen where I work. We have a minimum number of employees present (and armed) at all times, and very strict procedures to follow in just such a case.

.

The cartridges won't rust...Nothing about them to rust, unless you are carrying some steel cased third world cheapo crap, which I am sure you are not.......... I also get issued new duty ammo once a year for my handgun. That is a pretty expensive deal since it is about a buck a pop and each of us carry 46 rounds........We don't get ammo for our rifles every year, though. I'd guess part of it is money because we each carry 90 rounds and it is closer to 2 bucks a round and the other part is that the guns are cased or in a rifle rack in a vehicle and ammo is not exposed to the weather like the rounds on a duty belt.

Cartridge may not have been the exact term to use. The clips definately show wear/tear/corrosion/rusted spring inside, on the guys' who are exposed to the rain/snow/salt all year. Not bad, but it makes a little bit of a difference.
We too have 46 rounds of .40cal on us at all times.
