That ins. quote seems VERY high to me, I pay around $150.00 on a $13,000.00 declared value Crownline. Shop around a bit, I know its nice to keep things all in the family as far as ins. goes but thats way out of the ball park. Check some of the bigger companies like Boat U.S. Geico, Progressive, etc. I owned a Wellcraft and loved it, good boats with nice looks, my brother owned a Maxum for a number of years, also was a great boat with no real problems. Good luck on a purchase just continue to do your homework as you have and make an educated purchase.

Re: Should I buy a 97 Wellcraft Eclipse?

My insurance agent just called me and told me he was way off! He said $117/year for $300,000 liability, $5,000 injury per person, $7500 damage to boat and uninsured boaters coverage. Now these were just estimates because I'm not even set on a specific boat yet but do you think those coverages are enough?

I never would have even thought about boat insurance if not for this forum and I'm stunned at how inexpensive it is... it's a no brainer! Thanks Phil for raining on parade to begin with... you are correct! I do need to hear it all!

Thank you, thank you, thank you everyone for the insurance advice.

Coverage seems good, just make sure you have a declared value policy, otherwise if something happens to your boat, the insurance company can say it is worth whatever they think, and it is usually not enough to buy the same boat again. The whole idea behind the insurance is to make you whole if something happens to the boat or anyone on or around it. And to protect you from the morons that don't have insurance. On the boat, i would pay for a survey and also crawl all over the boat looking for any signs of rot. Snap out carpets make a big difference here as a fully fiber-glassed sole tends to let a lot less water get past the floor and into the structure of the boat. Motor also seems about right for the size of boat. Take your time though, it is a buyers market and you should be able to get exactly what you want at a good price.

Finally got out to see the Wellcraft. Nice sized boat, just a few problems. I'd still have to buy a cover for storage, the speedometer and trim gauges don't work, and it's missing the cushion that goes over the engine cover. Now the big problem... the trailer. The boat weighs 3300lbs dry, add the gas and gear and I need to find a trailer that can handle the weight and has brakes for cheap.. when you add $7000 for the boat plus $2000 for the trailer, it's just too high for a '97 boat. Right? But I did like the boat...
