there are three different pumps that you could be talking about.
off top of my head either asa-041 or asa-043 oring in a BN70 material. can't tell you which cuz don't know which you have.

In 1970 this would be a power tilt unit. This would have been sold as an assessory, it was not standard eguipment. I cant remember if it used a gasket, or O-ring. You may need an assessory catalog, and may be hard to find. The only flat plate with four screws' that I can think of is the motor cover that holds' the brushs'.

if it is tilt then it is asa041. I buy so many of those I have the part number memorized. The problem is the use of the word trim. When people use the word "trim" near the word "Evinrude" along with the word "1970's" ... then all bets are off. You never know if its Prestolite, Calco, aftermarket, or other. EJ made of fine mess of things with that pump.

Re: 1970 evinrude 85 hp trim pump leaking

that's a tilt only pump. use size 041 in material BN70. do not use square cut, quad lobe, or bn90 as they may lead to cracking of reservoir base or problems with armature seating into gears.

You motor looks like the bracket is broken and the field frame is held on with a big clamp? Why are you even trying to add more duct tape repairs. McGyver looked good on TV but they never showed you the stuff he built a week later. It always fell apart right after the camera turned off. Same thing pretty much holds true with duct tape repairs on a boat. Just shell out the $140 for a chinese trim motor and be done with it.

Re: 1970 evinrude 85 hp trim pump leaking

with all due respect, i am boating on a budget so i dont really have 150 to blow on a trim pump unless absolutly nessescary. if i can replace a gasket and it works then i am fine with that. yes the bracket is broken but i do plan to have it welded back on.

so the seal you say will work, size 041 in material BN70... is an o ring? pardon my ignorance... i just want to make sure i get the right thing.

LOL, so you can get 30 from them for less than one from omc. there's something wrong about that.

okay changed the o ring this weekend, its better but still leaking a little from somewhere, looks like the manual release? is there something in that part that can be replaced?

also im confused about the manual release. the screw turns 1/2 a turn total. seems like the slot horizontal is closed, vertical is open (release)? is that right? or am i doing something wrong?

the Valve body is a pandora's box. Only open it if you are willing to risk everything. The manual release is oval shaped on inside. As you spin it the oval pushes up on a release mechanism. Vertical is open. Horizontal is closed.

Re: 1970 evinrude 85 hp trim pump ***STILL LEAKING 6-7-10***

I am currently torn on motors whether to say replacement or rebuild. I was at first impressed with the chinese motors but last week I got a broken one. The circuit board melted and warped when it got hot. Now I am wondering if all the chinese motors have plastic brush cards instead of fiberglass. American motors like Arco and Sierra really aren't worth the price. They cost much more than a rebuild and don't fit properly. Unless your motor is FUBAR it is better to get the original rebuilt than spend over $200 on something that doesn't quite fit right.

Valve body? They haven't sold those for years. The same chinese company making motors is also making valve bodies and they are again available as new. I don't know what to say other than the price is good and nobody else is making them. If you want new then they are the only game in town. But I personally don't put too much faith in chinese made stuff.

and - i knew the size of the oring because i rebuild 3-5 Prestolite pumps every week during season. E/J pretty much used prestolite on everything under 120HP up to 1989 and I know most of the sizes by heart. I can go to the bins and pull the right parts without even looking up the parts diagrams on EJ and chrysler pumps.

I would say drop a -009 oring in the port and see if you can stop the pollution from dripping out of your engine. If so then live with it as long as you can. Then patiently watch ebay for NewOldStock (NOS) to pop up that has the parts you need.
