Welcome to the forums! Really like that boat! Seems like you're on the right track, keep gutting out all the old rotten wood, and expose as much of the mechanical and structure as you possibly can for inspection. Once you can get around everything, it will be much easier to see what hidden problems there might be. I am no expert, but I suspect people will chime in to recommend replacing those fuel lines.

How is the engine/outdrive? Did everything work ok with the boat? Are you planning on restoring it the way it was, or do you have a new design you're going to try out?

Woohoo... another Starcraft! But this time a 'glass resto so that's different from the usual SC alloy cult-members' boats. But don't worry, there'll be HEAPS of advice given as it seems most guys and gals on iboats either:

1. Own a Starcraft
2. Want a Starcraft
3. Are restoring a Starcraft
4. Are thinking of restoring a Starcraft, or...
5. Wish they could get an alloy Starcraft in Australia! :D

Welcome and cheers from the land downunder.

Welcome to the Starcraft armada...we've been lacking a 25ft glass cruiser to add to the mix:)

That's easily the heaviest SC on the site, good luck with the project!

Hey Mitch,

I suggest you ask your engine questions on the Mercruiser, OMC, Volvo & other I/O & Inboard Engines & Outdrives Forum - those guys are knowledgable and helpful. Cheers,

If the coil isn't pushing out a spark, it's not getting power. Use a voltmeter and check the positive side of the coil when the ignition is on. If it reads zero, trace the wiring back to ignition switch, starting with a fuse. Problem lies between ignition switch and ignition coil wiring, to verify you can "piggyback" a connection lead from the battery to terminal on ignition coil. It'll fire up.

Then the problem isn't with your coil making a spark. Are you sure your points are set right? Your distributor cap has clean connections? Your wires are good? Your plugs are good? How did you test to see if there's a spark, and did you check for power to the ignition coil with a voltmeter when the key is in the "on" position?

Re: 1970 starcraft 25foot cabin cruiser help

I replaced the cap, all the wires and plugs when I brought it home. I did check the coil with a voltmeter.

There is power going to the coil, but no power coming out of the coil.

Re: 1970 starcraft 25foot cabin cruiser help

If you have power running to the coil, your problem lies within either the coil, distributor, points, cap, wires, or plugs. What we know is good:

-coil
-spark plugs
-wires
-cap & rotor

Now, the only other thing left that needs to be checked is the points setup. Did you check them? Poorly set points will result in a no-start condition.

edit: Also, how is the grounding of the block? I recall one time I had a hard time starting my truck when the battery grounds became corroded.

Ok, he said the ground is fine. The starter is cranking. There is spark to the coil, but there is no spark out of the coil.

He said he wouldn't know the first thing about checking points, he have never had to mess with them.

I believe if you do a resistance check, testing between the output winding and ground you should get some resistance. If it reads open your coil is bad.
