Then that could very well be his problem. I'm not sure exactly how the points on his distributor is set up, there's a couple different designs and I don't want to confuse him by giving the wrong advice on how to set them. Best to get a service manual, and read the instructions on how to set the points and dwell angle. They're very easy to work with once you understand the basics. All he needs to work with them are a 2 dollar point file, and a can of electric contact cleaner helps too.

Best of luck

I believe if you do a resistance check, testing between the output winding and ground you should get some resistance. If it reads open your coil is bad.

He's already replaced one coil

Thank you both!

chargerboy, you've been a great help! Thanks for being so kind to us "newbies"... I'm excited about this restoration (cosmetic).. But don't know a thing about motors! So I try to stay out of his way! I'll take him that info, and he has me making a run to AutoZone as is... a great weekend wish to you all! :)

The Future Mrs. here...

Triton II he hasn't figured it out yet... He followed suggestions, and still nothing. He did his research to figure out the points but still nothing. He is going to check out a couple of other things this evening and if it is still a no go, then he will just call a mechanic to come out.. Hoping for the best..

Thank you for inquiring.. Best wishes..

How did you test to see if there's a spark?

This question still goes unanswered. Did he purchase a spark tester? What was used to figure out there is no voltage coming out of the coil? A good spark tester must be used to figure out what is going on. Coils are simple: power goes in to them, and if they are good, they amplify the voltage of the battery to 30 000 volts and send that to the distributor. If the coil was already changed with a brand new one that works, then it must be putting out a voltage also. There are no reasons why a good coil getting power into it will not deliver power.

So, where, and how was the spark tested? one of the spark plug wires? with a spark plug? on the coil to distributor wire? we need more info here to help. Maybe even a photo of how the coil is hooked up.

Welcome aboard with that big bad boy!

I will toss this out there as I dont know how new you guys are to boats...

You cant even think of firing that motor without water muffs on the outdrive..As few as 30 seconds of running the motor dry will fry your impeller in the lower outdrive leg..
If you know this, I apologize in advance, but would rather say LOOK OUT than hear you will be tearing the lower unit off..

Here is excellent reading on trouble shooting the starting system

Also, you can download your engine/outdrive manual here as well

:D:Instead of hasselin with points, go to an auto parts store and get a Pertronics electronic ignition upgrade module. It replaces all that junk inside the distributor. The module will outlast you, and it eleminates a bunch of problems.
