Hello I have a 1973 mercruiser 165 in a Tahiti. I was at the lake today at full power and the boat acted like it popped out of gear. I stopped and put it I. Neutral and it went into forward and reverse just fine. I started to go again and now the boat won't go above idle now with out it slipping, it is like a warn out clutch on a car. Also there seems to be a loud ticking now when in gear. Any help is much appreciated.

Check the outdrive oil level,if low it will take out the upper gearset, other thing is the engine coupler went bad.

Have you looked at the prop?
Can you turn it both directions when its in gear? You should only be able to turn it one way.

oil was a little low not bad just below the hole. I did take the prop off but I don't know if I spun the prop coupler it looks all tight. How hard is it to change the engine coupler?

Re: 165 is slipping above idle

Sounds very much like a spun prop hub. If the engine coupler was spun you would have an engine overheating as well....

Remove the high tension lead from the coil to the distributor, and put it in your pocket. Put the engine in forward gear and try to turn the prop backwards (anti-clockwise as you're looking at it). You shouldn't be able to turn it more than a few centimetres. Also have a smell of the hub. Smell of burnt rubber? I figured it would.....

Re: 165 is slipping above idle

thanks for the help. i will try taking off the lead on the coil. when i was having problems i was able to put it in gear and only spin the prop one way. and lock the other way. same result in reverse. I didn't notice the engine overheating i did smell a little burnt rubber when i had it out of the water with the motor running and in gear for maybe 15 seconds, but i didn't specifically smell the prob at the time.. when i took off the prop i didn't see any physical damage to the inside of the prop.

thanks

Best thing would be to take the prop to a prop shop if you have one close.... The other way to test it would be to put your spare prop on and see if it's doing the same thing....

Re: 165 is slipping above idle

Thanks for the help I have the prop in the shop and I noticed the rubber was chewed up and also a little rubber ball when I dropped it off. My local boat shop is going to send it to the next town over and have the rubber coupler replaced then give it another shot.

Thanks for all the help again
