Been trying to figure out how the distributor cap is configured. It's a good thing that it has a mark on the number 1. I just don't know how I have to put the spark plug wires back on the distributor cap. is it configure going clockwise 1,2,3,4 or counter-clockwise 1,4,3,2? thanks for the advice in advance.

What engine are you working on? A ser# would help also.

Serial # SERV7730F787, it's a 3.0L mercruiser alpha one and the firing sequence on the engine says 1,3,4,2.

Have someone turn the key while you watch the rotor turn or follow the wires to each plug while referancing the fireing order.

Firing order is engine dependant. It's been figured into the design to minimize vibration. Sometimes cast or etched on the engine block. Wingedwheel's thought is really the only way to be accurate.

Just for example -
  • 1-3-4-2 -- Most straight-4s, Ford Taunus V4 engine
  • 1-2-4-3 -- Some English Ford engines, Ford Kent engine
  • 1-3-2-4 -- Yamaha R1 crossplane
  • 1-4-3-2 -- Volkswagen air cooled engine

OK, you got it. Now watch the engine (distributor rotor) rotation. Start at your #1, in the direction of rotation, the next post the rotor points to will be the #3, and so on.

If your distributor rotor turns clockwise viewed looking down on the rotor, then this Honda cap would be the same as your layout.
