Hey I'm new to this thread ,any help would be greatly appreciated.I just bought this engine with this problem. The fellow said he broke the rope and installed a new one then the pull rope would not work after reassembled.I'm assuming that something is put together wrong. Can someone post a pic of one up close showing the starter pawls.Mine has 2 with 4 springs.I'm not sure of the yr or model as someone painted over it.Also, looking at the assembly with the pawl side up,is the rope supposed to be wound to the left side of the rope carrier or to the right? Thanks

Does the flywheel at least turn? You could always through the rope on there temporarily.

Really need to know the model number to help. Use some acetone, carb cleaner, or finger nail polish remover to remove the paint off of the sticker.

Re: 25 hp Johnson starter rope assembly problem

I replaced the the rope and recoil on my '81 25 hp.
I'm still trying to understand the problem? Can you pull the rope, or it doesn't rewind?
My only guess is he probably didn't rewind the coil correctly.
Here's my thread for reference. Good luck.

Re: 25 hp Johnson starter rope assembly problem

Thanks guys. I am still trying to locate the sticker on the engine. When I pull the rope, the pawls now kick out and retract as they should. The springs were installed wrong.I figured this out thru a pic I found on the net. When I set the assembly on the engine and pull it,its spinning the wrong direction I believe. As the way its spinning, the pawls are not able to catch the tits on the flywheel. They are dragging across. In the pic, should my rope be winding to the left instead of to the right?

the rope should recoil in CCW so that when you pull it uncoils CW and therefore rotates the flywheel clockwise as well.

So I rewound the spring and reassembled.Worked like a charm for 25-30 pulls. Then something popped and it quit catching when pulled. After removing again, one of the pawls were broke and 2 of the springs. What now? lol

Re: 25 hp Johnson starter rope assembly problem

when starting the engine or jsut pulling on the rope to test it always let it catch on the engine first as in dont just jerk on it right from the get go, but pull it slow until you feel it catch the engine then give it a good tug to start the engine. and if you cant find the correct part number go to www.marineengine.com and go boat engine parts and just keep going on throught your engine make and year then model and they will give you the entire parts catolog for your engine then just put the part number into their search and they will have the part almost every time unless out of stock probably
