Ok, i completely fudged the registration on my boat . Used stencil and a sharpie. Screwed up got to close to the logo on one side and forgot to start backwards on the othet. How to i safely remove sharpie off the boat without damaging boat paint? Hopefully Searider had has experience with these types of muff ups

Not knowing what type finish you have, I know that lacquer thinner will easily remove sharpies. But until verifying your finish, be extremely carful using any chemical. Try it on a hidden area to see if it is okay to use first though. JMHO!

Some times WD40 will work. Can't be too harmful it's made from fish oil.

On edit: is a sharpie or marks a lot a good choice? I was thinking of that myself as it seems to be pretty simple to do.

Sorry Weimed, it's not mandatory down here to register sibs nor ribs as long they are used as recreational boats. No experience whatsoever lettering or numbering them. Could try fingernail acetone to remove sharpie, gentle on fabric, is used to clean glue spills at factory.

Second option, acylic paint thinner, use it myself for cleaning hard to remove stains on my rib. Once clean, wipe tube with soappy water. Try on small area first. If you happen to have a spare tube patch, mark it with sharpie and try acetone or thinner on it..

Be careful with solvents. Some will do a number on PVC and can soften it a bit. I would suggest reducing the pressure in the tube a lot before trying to clean it with a solvent. This will prevent the softened area from stretching. Once the solvent area is thoroughly dry you can inflate the tube back to normal pressure.

Re: Help! Jacked up the reg #

The only solvents that softens pvc dramatically are MEK and some others cleaners of same type, that's if heavily abussed when cleaning. Been uysing from time to time for the last 5 years acrylic thinner to clean my inflatable air deck placed on my rib, still looks mint cond. Acrylic Thinner dampened into a cotton cleans well and evaporates really fast.

Don't use acetone, it's a government controlled substance used to make cocaine, buying large quantities of high qualityv finger nail acetone would cost a fortune. No need to deflate sib as acetone or thinner will slide and clean much better and faster on a stretched surface than on a soft one.

Sea rider beat me too it.. if you have patches... try a sharpie mark on that and try removing it as your guinea pig before you attack the boat. It is a PVC boat if anyone hasn't figured out by now

Oooooouch,

Weimed will need to answer if having a spare patch to try out acetone or thinner as indicated to start with, if you send me a sharpie asumming it's the marker brand be my guest. Will try it out for free...

BTW, my air deck is pvc made, not Polyurethane nor Hypalon made....the post is perfectly clear.

Buy yourself a dry erase marker, scribble over it and wipe away. I don't know how many times I've saved whiteboards doing this. I'm sure it shouldn't harm the finish. You may want to try a small spot first before doing the whole thing.

as alternative to clearing the sharpie.
use sharpie to cover the spot in black and then use white vinyl letters.
Seasense 3" Self Adhesive Vinyl Letter Number Kit Boat Registration White | eBay
may work.

I have a patch of pvc and so far tried wd40, nail polish remover, paint thinner. the only thing i seen effective was airplane paint remover but that thing started eating the patch lol so no bueno. White board??? if acetone did not do anything i doubt a marker will. I am at the point of just glueing a patch over it

Yes but you need to let it dry for a couple of days before you roll the boat back up

Re: Help! Jacked up the reg #

Check if vinyl cement is recommended for gluing pvc fabrics, vinyl and pvc have different composition. Pvc glue that comes in patch kit will work fantastic well if some drops of hardener is applied to it.

Update, marked a spare piece of pvc fabric with a sharpie type marker, made 2 parallel long lines, waited one hour, tried to remove them with Cuttex Acetone and high quality car paint Acrylic Thinner. Both removed about 90% marks, each product was tested on each mark. Mission Impossible to remove the line remains not even applying pressure and hard long rubbing. Sun and patience should take its time to completely fade away remaining lines...
