I failed to winterize our 2008 Maxum. The dealership is telling me the following :

Both manifolds are cracked. Plug was pushed out of one side of the block.

Oil level is high?

Boat needs a new block, and manifolds.

Boat is 6 cylinders with a 4.3 litre engine

Cost of repairs is $ 8,300.

Is this possible ?

Yes that is the going rate for a new marinized 4.3 with labor included. Can be done cheaper if you do it yourself though but it will most likely turn into a long drawn out project unless you know what you are doing. The dealer/marina will have you going in a couple of weeks AND it will be warrenteed...that is worth something.

Cost is probably in the ballpark but you might want to shop around.

Welcome Aboard!

Well, I suppose it depends on where on the planet you are.......

Not in the US?

You need another complete engine (long-block......block, heads)

You'll also need new manifolds.

Here's some examples.

Reman 4 3L 4BBL Partially Dressed Long Block 714 807736R11 4 3 | eBay

Mercruiser 4 3L Dry Joint Center Rise Exhaust Manifold Barr Marine MC 1 864612 | eBay

If you're in the US, add shipping, sales/use tax if applicable and installation labor if you cannot do it yourself.

If you're not, add customs, VAT, taxes, labor etc.

I would also add closed cooling to prevent a repeat occurrence.

Marine Fresh Water Cooling Systems | Fresh Water Cooling Systems | Fresh Water Cooling

Sorry about that,

Rick

Let me also add that, if your heads are "ok" and undamaged, you may be able to get just a "short" block engine (reman/rebuilt block only)

But if it were me, I would get the long block, dryjoint manifolds and closed cooling. (if it's a "half-system", you must still drain the manifolds each Fall. Full system, there's little or no draining)

Im going to play devils advocate here.....

Is that 8300 for an entire power package, or just the engine replacement? I would just replace the engine and bolt all of your accessories to it. No need of replacing the whole thing.

There are tons of 4.3 engines in GM small trucks, finding a block core to put your internals in would be easy. And if your heads are ok you could get by with just a short block and freshen your existing heads. If you need manifolds Im sure you could look around for some decent used ones as well. I know labor could be different where you are but I would think you could still get the engine rebuilt and manifolds replaced for around 4000-4500 including shop labor.

Or...you can get a brand new 4.3 long block from Marine Power for 2800+ shipping. And thats 100% new from GM not 'new' as in rebuilt like some sites claim. The exact same engine Mercury and Volvo use new they just put their accessories on it.

I just put a new engine in ours last year and had one built by a local machine shop then had the boat shop remove and replace. I was replacing a 305 with a 350 so almost everything internal was new, we used a 350 core for the block and bought complete new heads. I think the only thing we used off the 305 long block was the camshaft and the tinwork. I had a little under 3000 in the engine and about a 1000 at the boat shop for installation.

Yep........items and labor.. probably correct. do it yourself and shop around..(if you have the skil set) less than 1/2 that. you could probably buy a CL junker with a sound engine, swap it out, throw the junk boat away and keep the engine... I'd look there,, if money is not an issue, have the dealer do it... and this next fall.. drain the water out of it. remember... "air dont freeze", leave it empty

Yep, new engine, and add closed cooling. That is the big pain of raw water cooled inboards, if you forget ONE time you are done. After that expensive lesson, maybe a boat with an outboard will be better next time. Put the engine down, it drains. Expensive, yes. Convenient, yes, safer, yes.

First you need to evaluate if a 2008 Maxum is worth an $8300 repair bill. What kind of shape is the rest of the boat in?
