How do I remove the shift handle? There were several posts last week about this, including a link to a parts diagram, but it's been lost due to the bad database. I can't figure out how to remove the center button cover to access the screw/bolt that should be under the shift release button so that I can get at the neutral safety switch. Can someone help?

Does it just snap off? It doesn't seem to unscrew, so I'm a bit baffled as to how to do this. Thanks in advance.

You need to peel off the rubber to get at the white knob and remove that screw. Then, from underneath, you remove a set screw that is held in with an allen hex screw. Depending on your control, you may have to be in reverse to remove it. I don't remember. I will try to find that manual that i had posted before.

Peel off the rubber? Does this mean from the base of the button? Or does the cap itself just peel off?

Does it peel off at the base of the push button (bellows type area) or at the cap?

Sorry about the double post. My browser said it couldn't save the changes, so I tried again, and now I see they both posted. This new forum doesn't seem to be working very well......

Yes, it appears to be essentially the same, except in that picture it appears to be missing a larger cover for the plate behind the lever. I haven't tried pulling it off, but if it's like that picture, than it's just a friction fit over the center white plastic post.

I take it that once the handle is off, you should be able to get the other mounting screws off and the control can be removed from the inside and brought around to the outside where you can work on and disassemble it to get at the neutral safety switch. Is this correct?

Nope. Once you get the handle off, you get at the screws and the rest of the assembly goes away from where its mounted. You have to have access from the rear.

Well, that's what I was trying to say. It goes inward and as long as you have access to the backside, which I do reaching up from the back side, I should be able to bring it around to outside to work on it.

That all depends on the boat. It won't fit through the hole that the handle shaft goes through.
