I need to convert my 1997 Merc 4.3LX Gen+ old "Batwing" manifold over to the newer 2 piece models. I am planning on using all Merc parts with their conversion kit so I do not have to remove the motor to change out the Y-pipe. While I'm at it I am planning on replacing the shutters for good measure. Where is the best place to order the parts from? I only have a local dealer who wants over $2000 to order all the separate parts and I know there has to be some cheaper on-line dealers or conversion packages out there somewhere. Thanks for any helpful pointers or links to better deals.

Ayuh,.... If ya go with a "Kit",... Ya shouldn't have to change the y-pipe,....

Piecin' it together, that could bite ya,....

For "Merc" parts, I look 'em up on-line, 'n my local guy sells 'em to me at the same prices,....

Aftermarket, on-line is much cheaper,...

Got all my parts in and will start the install in a few weeks when I get some downtime from work. Couple quick questions if you guys don't mind.

1. The OEM conversion kit (864293A02) came with a lot of I think "extra" hardware other than plugs and bolts for the manifolds and risers. I only need to attach the shift cable bracket to the starboard manifold. Is the other hardware for other applications with multiple items attached to both manifolds?

2. Basic instructions mention using either pipe sealant or perfect seal on the threads; however, the threads are factory coated with red loctite. Do you still need the sealant or perfect seal with the factory red loctite?

Every thing else looks pretty straight forward and just time and muscle consuming. Can't wait to no longer worry about the 1 piece manifolds failing.

Let's see if I can get this posted this time. I typed it all out on my iPhone, then "blink", it was gone. Congrats on the manifolds. I used engine bolt tread sealer on the bolts and plugs. I had it already. My engine has the ignition module on the port manifold in addition to the shift assembly on the starboard. I used the plastic spacers behind it to reduce heat transfer. The long set screws are pretty cool. I wish they had sent 6. The 4 plated 12 point bolts are a mystery. No idea.
And the best for last, my instructions advised soaping the rubbers at the shutters and to push them down the Y pipe to check the alignment of old to new. Due to limited access for that fight, I removed the rubbers and bolted everything up. For once, the alignment was perfect.( just had to reopen this thread and restore what I had written so far) I then unbolted the elbows and lifted them enough to reinstall the rubbers.TIP- don't install the elbow to manifold gaskets until the final assembly. They tear. Found that out the hard way. $25 My instructions were pretty clear on what to do to align the old to new if it was required. My 1 piece manifolds were 12-13 years old and still didn't leak.I will probably always wonder if they really needed to be replaced. Good Luck

I'm sure I will always wander as well, but now I have peace of mind and don't need to worry what if any more.

Still unsure about the "Loctite 567 pipe sealant" on the threads since the threads are factory coated with the red Loctite. Just doesn't seem right placing pipe sealant on top of the red Loctite.

I'm sure it's not red loctite. It's a sealer of some type. If you bolt, unbolt your elbow, you will remove it any way.
