6hp%20crankshaft%20seal%203.jpg I removed the lower unit on my newly acquired 1954 Johnson 5.5 (CD 11) and I think I may be missing a few parts.
What I discovered is that my driveshaft has a thin dowel pin through it a few inches from the top, not knowing what it was for I did some research and although I didn't find anything specific to this model, I did find an article on LeeRoys Ramblings about newer 6 / 7 hp OMC motors that have the same dowel pin in the driveshaft. In the article, there is a parts schematic showing a spring and a few other parts that seem to go on top of this dowel pin and my motor didn't have these when I took it apart. Am I missing some parts or do they not apply to my motor?

You are missing some critical parts for your motor !!----It is the lower crankshaft mechanical seal assembly.----A gasket / stator / carbon seal / o-ring / cup / spring.---Order those parts from a Johnson dealer.

Thanks for the reply, I'm glad I asked or things might have gone sour for me.
I guess that leads to my next question... Where can I get the parts? I cant find a parts catalog that goes back to 1954.

Think I got it! lol

I hate this "new, improved" site. Been posting here for many years, and I don't think I will for much longer. I get so frustrated trying to post, that I give up. Too bad.

You do not need to look this up on a 1954 model.---Look it up on a 73 model as the parts were the same for many , many years !!!

I wondered what was going on with the site, I hadn't posted for quite a while as I focus on my snowmobiles in the boating "off season". I discovered that things weren't quite the same when I posted today. I'm just curious to know whether the part diagram that I had attached to the first post is visible to others?
I cant see any of the attachments that others had posted.
Anyhow, I did some cross checking and found the same 6 part numbers applied all the way up to the 1979 model year so it's good to know that the parts are readily available.
Thanks for the help.

I priced out the 6 parts at the dealer and was shocked at the price, $120 + tax, ouch! I took another look at the motor tonight and lucked out, way up inside the leg a few inches below the powerhead I found item # 2 resting on a ledge. This is great news since it was the most expensive of the 6 missing parts at over $50!
I don't know much about the seal, (item #4) but would it be advisable to buy that part new or would a good used one do the trick?

#4 is a carbon seal, used one would be fine. I may have some, Ill look for you. For sure I would want new parts for #1 and #3, the rest used is good. let me check my parts bins, that price is insane! lol

I have all the items in stock. I have both new and used carbon seals. The spring I have to verify, I have a box of about a zillion OMC springs, and don't have a known one handy to compare the length against. Anyone know the length for certain?

Thanks for all the help guys, I sincerely appreciate it. I'll be sure to order the top gasket and O ring new as suggested. I just had another look at the article in LeeRoys ramblings and it says to replace all of these parts you have to remove the powerhead, is this true?
